My hole where it sits is round, I ordered a 18-2727 or a 60923. the flapper with 60923 molded into it is oval, I need a round one, it shows both for the same number. is it needed?

Welcome
Most likely it should be 60930 but give us the motor serial number so it can be verified

that's the one I ordered but when you google that number, it shows both oval and round for the same number, the one in hand is oval. the hole is round where the flapper sits, I tried to post pictures, the site reply said there was a problem the administrator would have to fix.

Most likely Merc only makes the oval, but just guessing right now.

The shutters don't need to block 100% of the water flowing backwards, just needs to slow most of it so it doesn't make it back up to far

Merc seems to have changed the design several times. The replacement looks nothing like the original on my 1995 .

The oval flapper 60923 worked perfectly, we took the boat out yesterday and it did very good with the exception of the unplugged hole in the new manifold the old manifold didn't have that hole and it caused a vacuum leak, fixed and adjusted the idle so it's on 1000 on the ear muffs. The carbed 3.0 starts so much better too without that vac. leak too.

Yep that high idle is not good for a dog shift outdrive; I set my Cobra at 600 rpm in gear in the water & it goes in, and out of gear with 2 fingers

I'll readjust it after it's on the water, I agree, I want it as low as it can be and stable. I was just glad to find that air leak.

Lowest neutral idle speed ? Is not what you want.
Engine adjusted for a non stalling speed in gear. When you move throttle quickly from idle speed. Or quickly pull throttle from 1/2 to idle position. Cruisers on Auto Pilot will run right over you if you stall out.

lowest usable Idle speed in gear, for trolling, docking, driving on a trailer. When your on the water, you have to keep your head on a swivel.
