I have a 2004 Johnson (Suzuki) 140 HP that I just brought out of a long layup (been winterized since November 2006 due to a deployment to Afghanistan).

At the recommendation of a friend, I emptied all old fuel and sprayed fogging oil into the cylinders before turning over a couple of times by hand. Then added 10 gallons of fresh fuel, rigged up the cooling water, said a prayer, and started her up. No problem with startup; plenty of smoke from the fogging oil. The motor died after running about 30 seconds; I assume this was due to running on any existing fuel in the lines, as I forgot to prime the fuel line. Squeezed the ball 'til it got hard, started her back up, and then ran fine, at least for a little while.

After running about 2 or 3 minutes, the alarm went off and the check engine light went on. Checked the service manual, and I think I should have received some sort of flashing of the check engine light with a corresponding code to match up in the manual, but it was just a steady light and steady alarm. I killed the motor, let it set for a minute, then started it up again, and the same thing happened.

Since changing the oil and sparkplugs was on my list of things to do today, I did both while trying to figure out what could be wrong. When I drained the oil, I noticed lots of small bubbles in it. I checked for oil leaks, and none were readily apparent.

Changed the oil, put in new spark plugs, and started her back up again. Same exact thing: ran fine for about a minute or 2, then the check engine light and alarm.

Also on today's to-do list was to change the impeller. Did that after the oil change. Water flow (running on muffs) before and after impeller change is strong. Still getting the check engine light and alarm on the guage. I don't think any overheating is going on, as the high temp light is not lighting on the the guage.

Does anyone have any guesses as to what the cause could be?

Any and all help would be greatly appreciated; thanks!

Is possible it is the fuel restriction warning.

If you verify that the outboard is not overheating, you will need to look here.
