2003 50HP Carb Woes?

OK, I made the big mistake....fuel turned to varnish and I am having a heck of a time getting my 50 HP 2 stroke running again.

I bought the manual and OEM kits for the carbs and VRO. Changed tank to new, flushed the fuel lines, checked spark for both cyls(good).

I can get the motor to run but only at high speed @ 1200 - 1500 RPM. The motor will not idle and the carbs seem to be spitting fuel. I took the upper carb apart again today rechecked float setting (3/4" from base of carb to top of float), re-cleaned and still no go.

I cjecked the synch and that seemed OK. Butterflies closing, etc - this however I am not too savvy with.

Vacation at Myrtle in two weeks and I hope to bring the boat. Also I hate bringing it in to a shop, but if I have to.....

Thanks in advance, George

Re: 2003 50HP Carb Woes?

Did you fiddle with the red knob on the primer solenoid? If you did, you probably have it set for manual mode (manual choke) which will pump fuel like crazy. You said you had the carb kits but did you totally disassemble the carbs, clean the passages, and reassemble with the new kits? You also said you had a kit for the VRO. Did you mess with that? Improperly assembled inlet needles and seats will cause fuel overflow. With the information you've given, and not explaining what the engine was doing before you started this its tough to pinpoint the problem.

Good Evening Admiral....sorry, former Navy and the title and the man deserves the respect! I guess I did fiddle with the red knob, it is in the vertical position. I had read about that before but can not remember the "where" to reference. Which is the "normal" position?

The trouble that lead to the rebuild was a total loss in power. My son and I left the dock at idle (it would idle before) but had zero power under load. That is when I figured out the issue with the fuel. WHich led to the new tank, rebuilds, et al.

Yes the carbs were totally disassembled (except I did not want to force out the primary jet, so I cleaned in place), all passages cleared with sea foam and pipe cleaners. Smaller ports got copper wire cut from braided thhn. Gunk was cleaned out. Fuel lines flushed. Re-assembled with new kits and new gaskets on intake.

Again, it would NOT run much above 2000 rpm before. Now it will run up to 5000 but not idle.

Thank You for the help, Former Lt. Kaercher USN

I believe that red knob is supposed to be parallel with the solenoid body. To prove it, disconnect one of the small lines at either of the carbs. Then squeeze the primer bulb. If fuel squirts out, turn the knob the other way. If fuel comes out by squeezing the primer bulb, the lever is set to manual mode which is an emergency start (choke) in case you have to rope start the engine due to a dead battery. The primer solenoid would then be inoperative so this gives you a way to choke (prime) the engine. That would also indicate why it won't idle -- because its being choked to death.
