Hey guys,

Been an evinrude man most of my life. On some strange string of amazingly good luck, I was given a boat from a good friend. It was totalled in an accident and he got a FAT check for it, even with the buy-back. The motor on the boat is a SUPER clean, inside and out, 2002 150HP Yamaha. Start right up and runs perfectly. Honestly, I think all it could use is a seafoam treatment, two thermostats and an impeller all for good measure.

What do you guys think about these motors? Are the somewhat bullet-proof or do they have their fair share of issues? I am going to run a compression test on her, but I am wondering if I should keep it or just sell it. These things will go for around $3500 around these parts. Thanks!!

Is it a hpdi or ox66 or the basic carbed model motor? I used to be a evinrude guy until I got a fuel injected yamaha hpdi, now there is no way I would ever go back unless I get an excellent deal on a e-tec.

Good to hear. It is the carbed model. 150TXRB. Looks absolutely beautiful and runs very well. I have yet to do a compression test, check gear oil and seals, and check for solid spark on all 6 cylinders. Once I do that it will help me in my decision.

Here is where it gets crazy. I have a 20' Sunbird Neptune DC that is in good shape. Perfect fishing/family hybrid. I just put a remanufactured powerhead for the 130HP evinrude on it. With that, I replaced the entire ignition system, rebuilt the whole fuel system, and have only put the first 5 hours of break-in on her. It is a '95 motor. Transom will take a 150hp. That V6 will surely have more torque than this V4.

That being said, I have to warm the engine up at high idle for a few minutes before she will purrrrr like a kitten, but once done, shes ready to go. Motor has a good amount of torque, gets right on plane, and runs WOT like a banshee. Just a little smoky since the VRO was acting up and I run pre-mix.

So the dilemma now, is do I remove the motor and T top off the center console, dump the boat, keep the aluminum tandem axle trailer, and get a brand new SeaPro hull to outfit? That would require me selling the Neptune. Do I put the Yamaha on the Neptune, and sell the Evinrude with BRAND NEW powerhead and fully serviced engine? Or do I keep what I have, and sell the Yamaha, Trailer and T-Top. Probably make around $5k for the whole deal.

Decisions, decisions. Helping way this out, is the fact that my wife is about at her wits end with my boating fiasco. Plus its spring and I want to fish, and on top of that I have an 18 month old daughter. But she's my lil buddy!!
