I'm trying to drop the lower unit to replace the water pump, and the shifting rod is holding me up. It looks like half way down the lower unit the shifting rod is two piece ,with two stainless steel nuts connect it. Can I unscrew the larger 1 inch nut back up the shifting rod to disassemble them.Or is there a better way to drop the lower unit.
