Motor has new starter, solenoid and ignition switch. When I turn the key, sometimes solenoid will click, most of the time it will not. Seems like bad wiring/ground somewhere. No power to small yellow/red wire on solenoid. There is a ground on solenoid and three grounds attached together next to solenoid. When I take the three off of screw and test each, only one reads power with other end on red wire on solenoid. Any help is much appreciated. Boat pull starts great, but tired of looking at key and not being able to use it. Thanks!

Sounds like you need to start off by removing, cleaning, and properly tightening all your battery connections.

Re: 2001 25hp mercury will not start

I used a wire brush and cleaned terminals/wires. I noticed that the red wire coming from ign switch has another red wire(to rectifier?) connecting to it before it connects to solenoid. When the two are connected I do not get power on big red wire at solenoid, but if I disconnect wire to rectifier I do get power on big red battery wire. Not sure what that is all about. Fuse on wiring harness is good as well.

Make sure you got a good battery 12.6 volts. next check and make sure you have 12.6 volts at the red battery cable end on the start solenoid by putting the positive lead of the test meter on the positive post of the soleniod and the other on a good motor ground. next go to the keyswitch check and make sure you have good power there going in on the red purple wire. if that checks out next turn the key to the crank posistion and see if you have good power on the yellow red wire. my guess is the keyswitch is bad.

Re: 2001 25hp mercury will not start

I have replaced the ignition switch. I get the same issue with both the new and old switch. I tried to bypass the neutral switch and touch the two yellow/red wires together to see if that would work and had no luck. I am trying to troubleshoot this myself but appear to be running out of ideas.

Put the small red wires back on the solenoid, this is where they get power. check for 12v on both sides of the yellow/red wires at the engine/boat harness connector.
