Hope you can help me find this problem.
I thought it was the shift switch, which was bad,
but its still losing fire after warming up.
Motor runs great for 1/2 mile then spark breaks down. Ran great before I had a water pump put in.
Could the mechanic have done something that would have cause this?

Do you have a temp gauge? Is the tell tale squirting a good stream of water? Do you get an overheat alarm? I am not a mechanic but it sounds like something may have been missed during the water pump change.

Mac

Have gauges, the temp is fine and pressure is too.
Its seems to me from what little I know its either the Stator, power pack or wiring harness,
just havent checked them out yet.Heard it could even be a bad ground causing voltage lose?
Hope someone can point me in the right direction?
Go Fish!!!

wanted to add that we have already ruled out fuel
problems, its definetly spark and its there till you run it. Thought for sure it was the shift switch because it was the first thing I checked out and like I say it was bad, but not the only problem.

How, exactly, do you know that it is spark?

Before you completely rule out an overheat I suggest that you run the motor with the cover off. When it starts to slow down shut it off and feel the heads. Guages have been know not to tell the full story.

Re: 2001 225 Johnson losing spark

Have you done any troubleshooting at all yet? What is this "tester" you speak of? Does the engine stall when you lose this spark or are you losing a cylinder or two? These are the basic troubleshooting procedures to start with, you have to start with the basics if you start getting too involved you will start burying yourself and working backwards. Let us know exactly what the engine is doing.

Might as well put in my .02 worth. Brian....if ya' don't have a service manual, get one. It will pay for itself in the long haul.

Thanks for the input!!!
I have a service manual and my friend has a good multitester. Thats how we found out we where losing the starboard cylinders because of the shift switch. Havent tried anything else yet.
Just thought someone might have a suggestion on where to start looking first.

If you are saying that you are losing the entire starboard bank of cylinders after Quickstart or soon thereafter, you may be looking at a bad power pack. But deffinetely do some troubleshooting to be sure, you should post what you find so guys on the site can help you out and walk you through it, they have helped me figure out problems every time I have asked. Good Luck.

Re: 2001 225 Johnson losing spark

It was losing entire starboard side because the shift switch was bad but now its still losing fire after it warms up. Did check out the heat sensors today and they are fine. Guess Im gonna have to keep checking the cheaper parts first
and hope to find it this weekend. Need to fish!!
might just be a coil breaking down? Or that 1
and only power pack. If it only had 2 like my 115
I could just swap them. If I only had a good tester of my own. Anyone have any suggestions on
multi-testers and where to buy them?
