2001 225 EFI Problems shifting into foward

The last 2 times I've taken my boat out I have had some issues shifting into foward gear. I hear a clicking sound until I push the throttle up quite a ways (to the point that I'm uncomfortable shifting at this RPM for fear of blowing up the gears). Reverse works smooth. This leads me to my second problem that the tach doesn't work so I have no idea how high my RPMs are when it decides to shift. So here are my 2 questions.

1. Is there a way to tighten the shift cable or is my clutch/forward gear fried already?
2. Should I buy a new tach or is there a way to test my current tach?

Thanks for that link Dodge. I went ahead and changed out the cables today just in case and adjusted them per the manual. Seems to be working good on the hose now. Just need to try it in the water.

I'm asking, how would a throttle cable get out of adjustment ? or was there something broken in the cable ?

Our Force rpm just in gear is 750 rpm. If you can fix the tack for max RPM.

I have never heard of them getting out of adjustment so I assumed the cable was bad and replaced it and the throttle cable since they were 15 years old.
