Re: 2000 Johnson 225 will not go on plane.
Brownmule69, Are you having any luck?
I was thinking about the issue a couple of days ago and I suddenly remembered a similar issue that my dad had a dozen years ago. He had a mercury outboard and it had problems, in which he changed everything he could imagine. It was not as complicated as what the motors are today, so the big parts was the "power paks" or switch boxes, and the stator coil.
The problem was that he put on an aftermarket stator coil.
We took it out on the lake and it ran like cheetah for about half a day, then the main power cut out and it was down to running at about half speed,if that.
Well, my Dad was "is" a stubborn fellow and instead of taking it to a mechanic, he worked on it for a couple of years before finally taking it to mechanic. We had to suffer!
It's hard to remember exactly what was damaged, the stator or power packs, but he had to replace the stator and power packs.
What I learned was that there is a low speed winding and a high speed winding in the stators. I think the high speed circuitry in the power packs were damaged and I think he had to replace it all.
The question would be, is the high speed winding in the stator coil intermittant on you and cutting out, thus reducing your high speed power?
I know you have been in a quandry and I am just "grasping for straws" on what the problem could be.
Keep us informed.
Best of Luck
