I'M at the end of the rope trying to solve this problem I have a 200hp Johnson that starts up fine, I take off getting onto plane running at 5200 rpms and the motor dies. it will not restart. it will run on carb cleaner all day long. I changed the fuel pump twice. All six carbs, no difference, then I rebuilt them, changed the fuel lines twice, used a fresh 6gal setup no help. i ran it with and without thermostats, installed a new water pump. I even bought a spare 1997 Johnson outboard for parts and learning! I give up. and she will start the next day run like a champ for 2 min and then will not restart. I live on long island and no one wants to work on a Johnson motor. they just want to sell me a $25,000 motor. please help.

Hook up a timing light.----See if it loses spark when it quits.----Disconnect the black yellow stripe wire at powerpack.---Test run.

I did not bother because it runs on carb cleaner as long as you spray it. I was able to get back to the dock with just spray. lol

The fuel pump runs with the PRESSURE from crankcase compression.----That is not the same as compression in the cylinder !-----There may be an issue with crankcase compression and fuel pump does not work !-----Mix the fuel at 50:1 in the portable tank.----Have your assistant operate the manual fuel pump during the test run.

That sounds like a logical issue. thx. My question is can I put a vacuum gauge on the hose coming from the crankcase to the fuel pump to check it?

There have been issues with crankcase sealing rings.----Results in low crankcase compression.----Post the actual cylinder compression values.-----That may offer a clue.---Yes, you can put a PRESSURE gauge on the port to see what happens.----The fuel pump does NOT run on vacuum !

Running that motor on carb cleaner all day is not advisable.

50/1 in a spray bottle won't damage the engine.

Do what the journeyman experts say on here and post compression numbers.

Vro deleted or still using it?

I vote for bad gasoline. Could be water in the gasoline. Everything else is working fine.

sorry i,m new at this-- Cly #1-106#2-109#3-105#4-106#5-102#6-105 and yes deleted the vro system. I tried all the idle screw adjustments and it seems like 4.5 turns gets me the best run again i leave the motor for 1 day and she starts up idles and i can run in the water for 45sec at 5500 rpm until it dies out and does not restart unless i spray into the carbs. i also noticed that all the bowls are full with fuel.

I have a guess but the experts will know and don't need to guess.

Bad fuel is not one of my guesses.
