New to iboats and boats in general, but was able to get a lot of information from the site! I recently purchased a 2000 Bayliner Capri 1800 from a friend for a project to help take my mind off studying while at flight school. I knew the boat needed a whole new interior, but I also knew the hull was good and so was the transom. The motor was fine short of being serviced for quite some time. I ended up getting the boat for $500 after some solid negotiating and my buddy just being a good friend. He knew the amount of work ahead of me, and I think he felt bad... haha! So I jumped into the demo, and probably referenced iboats about a dozen times or so to make sure I didn't do anything to bad! HAHA :) It's coming along pretty well, and I will post pics as I progress. I appreciate any help or reccommendations you all might have. Looking forward to sharing and learning!

Re: 2000 Bayliner Capri Deck and Interior Rebuild

Welcome to Iboats Isedhooah!! :D

We're all here to help. I couldn;t have done my project without teh great people on this site. You do have a lot of work ahead, but also a lot of reward. I'm surprised to see a new boat with so much rot. Are you SURE the transom is good? Ypu should take core samples -- drill into the transom and look at the wood shavings.. dry and tan = good. wet or dark = rot. Don't drill through the outer fiberglass skin. Drill a few holes in various spots. Fill holes with 3m 5200.. Then you can say the transom is good.. but a wet deck usually means a wet transom and stringers... Best of luck and we're here to help :D

Welcome to iBoats!

Wow, so what is the story behind that boat? It's unusual to see a 2000 in such "weathered" condition. Was it left outside without a cover all its life?

Regardless - looks like you got a great deal! A little effort and you'll have a beautiful boat.

More demo..... I cut away at the deck until I hit dry healthy wood. Thankfully the rot stopped at the deck, when I cut into the stringers they were still solid and in good condition!

Thanks for the welcome Zopperman! I have not gone that deep into inspecting the transom. Thanks for the info. I will have to investigate it further obviously. Should I drill through the outside of the boat around the motor mount? I guess I'm just a little confused on where to actually drill those test holes.

Thanks for the welcome! Yes the boat was left outside uncovered for as long as I've been around it which was about a year. Don't know about it's life before that, but I know when my friend aquired it, it was not in much better condition. He just didn't have the attention span or the patience to fix it up and just took it out like it was... haha.

New deck layed in. Cut out the ski locker. I also put new supports under the deck but don't have pictures of that. I tried to make sure to put the supports where the old deck seemed to give way. I also put down the first coat of resin. I fiberglassed the cut edge of the ski locker, since that was a major weak spot on the old deck. I think it turned out pretty good being the first time I ever messed with fiberglass :D

Hang on their buddy!!!
You said you cut the stringer, I hope you fixed it, How did you fix it?
You also have new supports under the deck. Are they glassed in ? Are they touching the hull? If they are touching the hull without any epoxy or pl between you will wear a hole in the hull from them rubbing against it.
You should glass the top of the entire deck. Will you tabb it in to the hull?

Your deck looks great thou.

DRILL TEST

Use a 3/8 drill bit with a stopper on the end or use tape to measure so you only drill in the wood 1 1/2 inch, This is so you don't drill throu the outer skin of your hull. Wrap the tape around the end of the bit for the mesurment.

You need to drill the holes on the inner transom, as low as you can around the plug area. Three to 4 holes spaced out should tell you what you have in their. If good fill holes with 5200.

did you glass the underside of the deck? Is it tabbed into the hull? If so, did you grind the hull down to fresh glass? What kind of glass/resin did you use?

I guess I was misleading when I said I "cut" into the stringers. There were locations where I slightly cut through the glass on the stringers while removing the deck, but it was deep enough to see the wood shavings. These locations were spread out enough to give me a pretty good look at at least the top surfaces of the stringers and all the wood was solid. I drilled small holes throughout the stringers then to test the cores, similar to how you all are telling me to do with the transom (I read about doing that on another forum) I reglassed the exposed areas, and filled in the small drilled holes with 5200. The supports under the deck do not touch the hull, and I debated on glassing them in but decided not to. My reasoning was since they were not touching the hull I didn't believe water would be sitting on the them. However, they were really just something I added around the ski locker to try to keep it from giving way like it did before and are secured with PL and thickened resin.

I did glass the top of the entire deck. I wasn't aware of "tabbing" until after I had already layed the first layer. The first layer overlapped onto the hull about 4" on both sides. I'm hoping that will be sufficiant. Anything you think may help with missing that step? I am currently just working on the trailer since I'm getting ready to leave flight school in Alabama and drive back to PA, so i've shifted my focus to that. But I will try to get that transom test done sometime soon. Let you all know what I find.

Did you grind down to fresh glass on the hull? Water alwyas finds its way places you think it wont... that's why everything must be sealed properly.

yeah i might have messed up there man..... i sanded the hell out the hull with 80 grit but still couldn't get to fresh glass over the entire border. after i was done sanding where the glass would lay on the hull there was no carpet adhesive, but still some left over paint that i couldn't get off. the glass itself seemed to adhear well though. i guess that's the second lesson learned so far huh? and to answer you question from earlier, i glassed the underside of the deck around the ski locker. that was one thing i couldn't find out with all the forums was weather the underside should be completely glassed as well. all the forums i read really didn't specify weather you should or not.

Probably could have been with the tabbing... but oh well. If it were me, I wouldn't grind it down... I hate grinding... The underside should be treated in some way to protect from moisture... I glassed mine. What type of glass and resin did you use? Poly resin alone isn't sufficient...

Re: 2000 Bayliner Capri Deck and Interior Rebuild

Heres pics of the first layer of glass, and the PB filled gap around the deck. I used 1708 and poly. I know that the majority of people on here reccommend epoxy over poly, I just couldn't bring myself to spend the money for epoxy especially since I've never worked with glass and wasnt sure how it would go. However, I wish i would've done a little bit more research on what clothe to use. The more time i spend on here the more i see that i should've used CSM, so hopefully this isn't to big of an issue? Also, i have the second coat of glass down with wax (last 2 pics), but then decided to gelcoat. I already sanded off the wax from my second layer of glass. Anymore suggestions before gelcoat? I am planning on recarpeting the floor as well.

As far as I know from all the threads I have read, nobody recommends epoxy. I always hear "your boat was made out of Poly, so stick with it"

So, looks good so far! Don't sweat it!

I'm looking forward (not really) to a deck replacement and partial rear stringer replacement myself, so good luck with your project!

Also gelcoat doesn't stick to epoxy! so I think you made the right choice.
