2000 30HP electrical problem

Well, once again I was called by a friend to help fix his engine. He said that his starter bracket had broke a while ago. He finally got the new bracket but couldn't remember how to wire up the starter. The engine has an electric ignition switch. He said that when he was trying to wire the starter up that a big puff of smoke came from the right side of the engine if you are looking at it from the back. i went over to take a look. The starter has a positive terminal on it but no negative, so I figured that the negative mounts to the short bolt in the bottom of starter. If this is wrong let me know? Once I had it wired the way I thought was correct I got nothing. I can hear a solenoid clicking under the flywheel when the battery is hooked up. The positive battery cable runs straight to the ignition solenoid. I have constant power to there of course. When the key is turned I can hear a solenoid clicking but it doesnt sound like the ignition solenoid, which would send power to the starter. I think the problem is the solenoid thats sends power to starter, but the random puff of smoke has me worried it is something else. The engine ran fine before the starter bracket broke. I haven't worked on johnson engines too much, so i followed the basic concept of how power gets to the starter. I can't figure it out. If anyone has a wiring diagram or knowledge they would like to share it would be greatly appreciated!!!!

The model# is 30elced serial# 08156858. If anyone has a downloadable manual that would be great! I will try to get some pics posted soon.

here are some pics. The first one is the electronic keyswitch. I think it may be wired wrong, but I can't find a diagram. The second one is the part that started smoking all the sudden. The starter solenoid is getting the direct power from the battery, but the keyswitch isn't telling the solenoid to close and send power to starter. The engine pull starts, and runs fine.

I wasn't able to find that model number anywhere on the Johnson/Evinrude website. I looked for it on other websites, too, & it didn't show up anywhere from 1989 up to 2005.This link should show ya all the factory info.

It doesn't show wiring diagrams, but it might be helpfull to see the parts diagrams, if ya can find that model number. My best other suggestion would be to try your local library, to find a shop manual for it. It would have the wiring diagrams & troubleshooting info, too.

Correction, your motor is a 1989 30 HP. You didn't say if it was a Johnson or Evinrude? Anyway, I have the service manual for 1986. I might be able to help you with a wiring diagram. Here's a link to the parts manual.

It appears the black item behind the wiring terminal strip is the rectifier for the charging system That piece is "toast" as it appears that's where the smoke came from. Rest assured the charging system will ot function when you do figure out the wiring. To toast the rectifier you likely reversed polarity somewhere during assembly.

1) The S terminal on the ignition switch feeds the small terminal on the starter solenoid.
2) The red battery cable goes to the large terminal on the starter solenoid. That terminal should also have a smaller red wire on it.
3) The other large terminal on the solenoid goes to the positive lug on the starter.
4) The starter gets its ground when you bolt it to the engine block.
5) The negative battery terminal bolts to the engine block.
6) The B terminal on the ignition switch should have +12 volts on it all the time.
7) The C terminal on the ignition switch goes to the choke/primer solenoid
8) The A terminal will likely be empty if there are no gauges

I appreciate all the info. Thanks for the link to the parts list. The engine is a johnson. SILVERTIP- Thanks for the info, but I have no diagram for the ignition switch so I don't know which terminal is which. the switch is a six prong terminal. I am following you on the wiring directions, but there is two extra wires that you didn't mention. One is a small wire grounded to the couling frame and its only long enough to mount to the bottom of the starter. Then there is another black wire that comes out of the wire harness by the solenoid. When I see black I think ground, so i grounded it with the negative battery terminal because it looks like it goes there. I guess I will have to tell by buddy to by a manual so that I can find a diagram Thanks for all the help.
