Hi

I'd like to get any info about a 1998 200 HP Mercury Optimax. I need a new motor for my boat ( 21 Sea Ray Laguna ) I saw in a couple of forum that this is the good HP for this kind of boat ( 200 ). I found a 200 hp 1998 for sale in really good condition and with few hours.

Is anybody familiar with this engine that can tell me something about good bad things and how many gallons burns per hour at top and cruising speed ?

Thanks

Re: 200 HP 1998 Optimax MPG

I have this engine on a 22 foot mako open fisherman. excellent engine with plenty of power, not sure how much fuel economy, but i fish offshore all day trolling and gunning and the most i have ever spent was 45 gallons for an entire long day. one thing to look for, however, these engines had issues or problems with the black colored direct injectors. make sure the one you buy has blue direct injectors or risk one of them failing at $300 a piece (part only).

I've got a Merc 200EFI 1997 on my 21' Sea Ray Laguna CC from -97.
Excellent combo with great thrust and nice speeds.

Maximum speed at ~40 knots (46mph), haven't really worked out the economy at full throttle but with no real load it would be around 8 gallons an hour in cruise at about 30 knots (34mph). (If i got the conversion right, ~1liter / nautic mile).

Chatted with a gentleman the other day running a -93 21' Laguna equipped with a -00 225 Evinrude and he claimed roughly the same fuel consumption but top speeds at ~43 knots (49mph).

Sorry for the European style units! :D
