Hey guys!! new here and first post [well other then a problem getting through the reg proses ]

I have a 85 Rinker 205v [20 and a 1/2 feet long] and she needs some help. Been out of the water about 7 years. Had a fuel issue, and then we built a new house, then two kids came etc etc.... Well after a few years sitting, some vermin got id, ripped up a lot of stuff including the cover. Well I was pretty POed to say the least, and just let it sit for a few more years. Moved it up on the list 2 years ago, and found a TON of rot!!!!! Cleared out all the seats, and gutted it. Ended up having to rip up all the floors, and have a lot of rot in the stringers. As of last summer, the engine stringers, and transom seems fine. Mostly the aera around the belly tank are the worse becouse of the disign that lets water get in.

Well lets get to some pictures....

This is the boat..... Nice size for me, and had a nice layout

Here is a few pic's of the floor ripped out....

Sorry, I cant find the rest of the pic's.

Most of the rot seems to be the floor [gone all ready] and the stringers alongside the belly tank. A little on the small cross stringers, but not that bad. I still have to get the tank out, and the rest of the rotted stringers.

Re: 20' Rinker redo

OK, so now come the Q's....

I want to check out the transom, and engine stringers real good before I start the floor. they seem good, but I dont want to do a lot of work, and find they are bad also. I hear about drilling core samples.. SOmeone want to walk me through that? Do I just take a small drill, and drill in, and check the chips???

Next, I need to get that belly tank out. How are they held in??

Now I may be jumping ahead a little, but can that tank be totaly coverd with floor?? It had a removable panel over it, and thats what let all the water in to the floors.

Any changes I should make wile I am in here??

Any other info for me at all??

Welcome to iboats!

Looks like you have some fun ahead... Not sure about checking transom, but yes fuel tanks can be covered by the deck. You may have had some issues with drainage... Most holes or ports in deck should be routed to drainage.. Now would be the time to design a drainage system to suit your new layout.

If you search this resto thread, I'm sure the info about checking transom, can be found... I've briefly read about it many times...

Cool, thanks for the links!!!

Well went out and checked it out today. Well did a core sample of the engine mount stringer, and found wet, punky wood. :( Hmmm.... not sure what to do. Not sure its worth pulling the engine, and doing all that work to it.

I understand... I'm beginning to think I'm nuts for doing my project... But en the end it's the experience.. Good and bad that make all the effort worth something. What drive does it have? You could always part it out and find a project in better condition?

It has the AlphaI drive with the 3.7L LX 190hp. I have been seeing a lot of the same size boats come up for sale for a few grand, so that may be the best thing.

Re: 20' Rinker redo

OK, call me stupid... [your stupid. :D] But Im going to go foward with this. You know... I Allready have the boat.. all paid for, and I like the boat, and it has/does what I need it to. You know... I can buy a $2000 boat, and have a unknown, or put $1500-2000 in this one, and I know what I have. So I am going to dive in!!!

The last few days I have gotten it propped up as bow high as I can, and making sure I got all the water out. Cleaned out all I can, and waiting for the rest to melt. Hopefully I am bringing it up to the house tonight, and start back to work on it.

Wish me luck!!!

OK, I got the boat up near the garage so I can work on it. Todays project will be to get some oil in the cyl's, turn it over, and give it a test firs to make sure the engine survived the storage. As long as that goes well, I plan on starting work on cutting the rotten wood out!

Found some more pic's of the boat, so I will post them here.

This is what happands when the cover gets ripped up. :(

you can see some of the ripped up insides where the vermin got in!

Most of the inside gutted. Look at the hole where the helm seat was... What were they thinking??? Also the fuel tank cover that was just a peice of ply with carpet on it had raw wood along side the fuel tank. No wonder she was all rotted. Im hoping to floor over the tank, and get rid of the panel.

Nice front quarter view of the hull. I realy like the boat. I boat on the cost of Cape Cod, and this is a nice running, hull in the sea. No slamming off of a wave, just a nice soft "WHOOOSH" as it comes off of a swell.

Re: 20' Rinker redo

Your where I was five years ago when I was given my 20ft Maxum, over that period of time it's gone from a Cuddy Cabin to a Bowrider and now a Center Console. I haven't even finished the Center Console version and am dreaming about the possibility of cutting the hull down and making a drag boat of sorts out of it some day.
Seeing your project has brought back some great memories for me while working on my project. Hope all goes well during your rebuild!

max!

Re: 20' Rinker redo

Thanks Max!

Well I got the plugs out [ALWAYS a fun job on a 3.7L!!!] and got a little oil down the cyl's. Turned the engine with a ratchet, and she moved. Hooked up a battery, and she cranked over!!!! No spark, so I had no fire, but she's not stuck, so I am happy enough to move on with the rest of the project!!!!

Re: 20' Rinker redo

Well... Ya, Im going for it!!!

Next step is remove the rotted stringers that run along the fuel tank, and get that tank out. [belly tank] After that, I can get to the engine mount, and start cutting that out, and replace it. Once thats done, the rest is pretty much gravy. [famous last words!!]

As far as changes...... I am thinking of putting a solid floor over the fuel tank. I will lose access to it, but that removable panel just let water in, and rotted it all out!!! I am thinking of putting some kinda a deck plate over the vent hose attachment [but not totaly sure on that yet] and over the fill tube connection/sending unit area for servicing.

i put a solid floor over mine.. i have two of those circle hatches one above the line to the engine and one at the front of the tank.. you can see them in my little picture by my name

And those hatches seal good enough to keep the water out?

Re: 20' Rinker redo

i actually only used it once on the water... so i went out there and got the hose and did a little test.. some water got thru but it was where the hatch touches the wood some im thinking i could use some like bathroom or window caulk and put it around the edges..no water thru the hatch tho.

Re: 20' Rinker redo

are you doing the full 9 yards? stringers, engine mounts, transom, floor?

We used 5 gallons just doing our transom in our boat. the transom is 7 1/2 x 3 at the deepest/widest points

Re: 20' Rinker redo

The transom is still good. So just the stringers, engine mount stringer[just one short one on this. 3.7L] and floor
