20 hp merc drive shaft removal

how do i get the drive shaft out ? theres a nut over the gear in the lower unit gear case does that have to come off ? i tried to get it off but a socket wont get on it, and an open end wrench barely fits on it and just keeps slipping off . is there a special tool? Any ideas?

We either use a box end with the side towards the nut ground flat so there is no fluke on it or a 1/4 drive socket that is thinned and flatten like the wrench. Use care not to strip the corners off the nut or the fun has just begun.
