What is tipping? Why do alot of people paint a boat with a roller instead of a spray gun? Seems to me it would come out alot smother by spraying it.

Re: 2 questions on tip and roller

A lot of people roll and tip it because they don't want to pay the thousands of dollars to have it sprayed.

And because when properly done with the roll and tip method, it can come out looking like it was sprayed anyways. :)

The tip part refers to lightly running the "tip" of a brush over what you just rolled to get rid of any roller marks, or imperfections and to smooth it out.

Roll and tip (proper term) works just fine and the finish will equal a spray gun.

The paint is rolled on and the very tip of the paintbrush is used to smooth it out.

So I'l take a guess here presume that roll and tip method is put on thicker and dosen't need as many coats? Foam or nap roller? Foam or bristle brush? Thanks for your quick responses.

No - you want to apply several thin coats instead of one thick coat. The thicker the paint, the more difficult for it to properly flow out.

Re: 2 questions on tip and roller

I painted my boat via the Roll & Tip method. I used Interlux paint/primer.

It took me about 30 minutes for each side. I rolled, and my friend tipped. I found that if you use a FOAM roller for "SMOOTH" surfaces it works the best. When tipping use a PREMIUM brush. I bought an el'cheapo 3.99 brush from Walmart, and the first stroke (when tipping) a bristle fell out. I was pissed. I went to home depot and found a 3" premium type brush (15.99), and I used it to finish the whole boat, and it still cleans up like new.

Mark is right about thin layers. I did 3 layers on each side. If I wouldn't have screwed up on my first go around with my boat I would have gotten away with finishing the whole thing with just 1 gallon of paint.

If you buy 1 gallon of the 1 part roll-on type paint make sure you thin it out correctly. I used Interlux 333 (it's like 20 bucks).

OH, and if they say it takes 8 hours to dry, they really mean 24 hours!
