1st time owning a boat???

My father in-law gave me a 14 1/2 foot custom craft and it had a yamaha cover on what i found out to be a Mercury, but i'm not sure the year but it's very clean and i found the serial number???/ How can i find out the year????? Anybody know???

Any boat produced after 1972 has the same HIN format. Here it is:
digits 1-3 Manufacturer identification code
digits 4-8 Unique 5 digit serial assigned to the vessel
digits 9-12 Date of certification: Prior to 84'- this is the month and year of certification/model year designation. After 84'- digits 9/10 are date of certification, digits 11/12- 2 digit model year.

That's a long way of saying look at digits 11/12 lol
