1998 Mercruiser 5.7l inboard carb question

Hello,

First post here. I have 1998 Ski Supreme with a 5.7l serial #0L002570 and am having problems at idle and accelerating. The boat will die or I will have to pump it through acceleration, but once its going its fine. I am thinking the carb needs cleaning or replacing.

If it does in fact need a new carb is there an upgrade for this engine? Would like to get more HP out of the engine or if there are newer more efficient carbs out there replace it with one of those.

Also if anyone has any suggestions for a quicker fix than replace or rebuild I would appreciate it. Have tried running carb cleaner through it with no luck.

Troubleshooting something like this, I prefer to start simple and work from there. One of the first things I would check is to make sure adequate fuel is getting to the carb, by checking the fuel filter and fuel pump. May also need to look and the accelerator pump on the carb as well. If it's never been rebuilt in the 15 years of its life, you may need to consider it. If you want to replace, I'd recommend upgrading to and Edelbrock. A friend of mine replaced a q-jet with an edelbrock on a 454 and got better throttle response and, surprisingly, it was also more efficient. Good luck!

They can be rebuilt, but it's complicated. If you are asking you probably can't do it yourself. I'd either get it redone by a pro or buy a new one. If you are going new, Edelbrock is great. If you want more oomph you could get a high rise intake manifold, if there's room.
I'd fix the problem first, you'd be surprised how those boats accelerate when they are right.
