I have a 1998 Mariner 25hp 4 stroke that has been serviced and is ready to install on a home built boat. I'm having difficulty with the wiring for the instrumentation I will be installing. Unable to get any local help with this, so I am looking for support with questions on the wiring colors and connections to the instrumentation. I can provide lots of detailed photos to help. Could someone be able to help with this type of thing?

Controls will generally have a 3 or 5 pin plug exiting them. There is a matching cable sold by the manufacturer, which breaks it into ring terminals.

all will have Grey for tach signal, black for ground and purple for ign power.

If 5 pin, tan is for temp gauge. The other wire may be for tilt gauge.

Overheat buzzer should be inside control.

I've attached 4 pics showing the existing wiring setup from the old merc controller and the cable ends from the new mercury controller. I found the 5 pin cable you refer to. My first question is what the 3 wires are for on the left side of motor in pic. They are tan/black stripe, tan/white stripe, and purple. They are all currently plugged off. My next question is the 4 separate wires that are in addition to the 5 pin connector at controller are the same colors as the 4 wires that will be with the 8 pin connector once attached at motor. Do these 4 wires simply get connected together? I believe 2 of them are for the tilt/trim function...

The blue/white and green/white next to the male pin would be for trim/tilt. They would connect to matching color wires at the motor. The brown is likely for temp gauge. Another one is likely trim gauge. Not sure about the other. Your engine may not have senders for trim gauge and temp gauge. You will need to check.

About the other wires...tan/trace is usually an alarm sensor of some kind. Purple is ign power. it looks like your motor has an ECM and therefore different electronics from the older motors. You should get a wiring diagram for your exact motor. You can look on the maxrules site and see what they have.
