1998 250 hp hohnson ignition problem

Ive got this motor and it will only run if you hold the starter in , the moment you let go she dies . Got voltage on purple wire , bypassed the neutral safety switch and no change . Any ideas ?

Could be the power coils on the stator which run quick start and slow. Or else weak center flywheel magnets.

Do you mean hold the key in the start position or pushing in on the key to choke?

To check any electrical part on a mtr you need the proper test equipment and a good manual.

i need to hold the key in the start position for the engine to keep running

I changed the stator , flywheel and powerpack over with the stb engine and no difference at all .

Did you change the key switch ??
