I have a 60HP 97 Johnson. It seems to run well enough. However, if I decelerate hard (like pull the throttle back to idle from a plane) I hear this rattle noise. It has always done this but it seems to be a bit worse lately. If I decel easy it is as quiet as a mouse. Carbon? Piston slap? I have yet to do a compression test. thanks in advance KB
I tried pushing the primer on decel with engine rattling, no change. Compression test results are 125 for all 3 cylinders.
A further question if I may. At what engine speed would I get best fuel economy. The boat planes nicely at 4000 RPM. Should I be running it higher? thanks again.

Here's the story. I am out on the lake today, picked up some weeds and the engine overheated. The alarm sounded and I shut the engine off (it ran on for several seconds. I cleared the weeds fired it up, lots of water out the pee-tube. Now what happens is I'll be running along 4000 rpm and it starts losing power like it is running out of fuel. I can keep it going for a little longer by squeezing the primer bulb but eventually the engine slows right down and the alarm comes on beep beep beep (not continuous like when it overheated). I tried switching fuel tanks with no change. Came home on the 3 HP trolling motor. There is lots of oil in the VRO. It sounds like a fuel restriction to me. I read in one of the other posts about a fuel restriction alarm. Could this be what I have? Where is this thing? When I got the boat home I removed the fuel line from the outlet side off the fuel filter and when squeezing the primer had no problem getting fuel to flow. any suggestion would be greatly appreciated (I do have a service manual)

Re: rattle on decel

Re: rattle on decel

Next time you do that try bumping the primer and see if that makes it quit knocking.
