I just purchased a boat with this motor and noticed when I pulled the cover off that the carb intake is exposed(no air cleaner). The guy I bought it from said he received it this way. I looked at a carb assembly diagram and there is a air silencer assembly which covers the intake but it is listed as an obsolete part. Is this normal to be exposed? As the intake has a light coating of oil if is perfectly clean. Thanks.

It's normal. I think they stopped using air silencers on those mtrs about 10 yrs ago but I may be wrong.

Many motors had/have SILENCERS. None have air CLEANERS. There isn't much dust on the lake to clean.
