1997 200 Efi speed problem

hi all,
I purchased my first boat a few months ago and its a 20' procraft with a 1997 mercury 200 efi. the motor runs great but I cant seem to go faster than 40 MPH before i hit its RPM range of 5,800. I have messed with the trim and such to try and figure it out but it seems to be something beyond that. Any tips or suggestions would be great!

When you hit the 5800 rpm, do you still have throttle left or is the throttle wide open ? If throttle is wot at 5800 and the max rpm for your motor is 5800, then you are there, 40 is what your gonna get !!

I am not even close to WOT, I have a hot foot on and i still have plenty of juice left

Gee, what pitch prop? Does she trim up, or plow water when trimmed?

5,800 rpm is “red line” for your motor.

You have a problem with your tachometer or prop

Thats what Im thinking, i have a P23 prop so I dont think its the problem, taking it in to get the tachometer checked

I've got a 23 on it. It trims up fine but by the Im cruising on plane and starting to trim its showing 5,500-5,800 RPM's
