Having some issues with my 30hp Evinrude and hoping someone can give me some good advice as I have a fishing trip coming up in the next month. I am experiencing loss of power (not huge but noticeable), white smoke when slowing down, and the middle section of the motor above the water is getting extremely hot after running for short periods. It also appears I have some water under the engine cover after running for a bit.

Have had this for three years and maybe used it every other weekend in the summers...only ever changed the lower unit oil and spark plugs. Any advice on what this might be and the corrective action that needs to be taken?

Thank you in advance

Welcome to iboats. White smoke is not good. That is water getting in your cylinders and that is bad news because water doesn't ignite. Might just be the head gasket which is an easy fix. Just make sure that you torque it properly and then retorque if after running a couple of hours. If you are still getting water in a cylinder then you will need to change your exhaust gaskets on the port side of the engine.

Thank you for your response. Would the head gasket account for the overheating as well?

Thanks again!

You never mentioned an overheating problem. do you get water out of the telltale? If you do then you could have a water jacket clogged with gunk or your tstat is stuck. head gasket is usually not the cause of overheating.

Thanks. I might have made a bad choice in wording when I said overheating - I am noticing that the section of the motor that is right above the water is extremely hot to touch after running for a bit. If I splash water on it, it evaporates almost immediately. Yes, I have water coming out of the telltale. Thanks again for your advice.
