I was taking my boat off of the water a few days ago and rode from the dock to the boat ramp which was a very few feet. Maybe 2 minutes in to the ride to the ramp my alarm started going off. I looked back and water was streaming from the pee hole. What other things if any can make the alarm sound? I've owned the boat over 15 years and have never had it happen before. Is overheating the only reason a motor will sound the alarm like that?

Just because it's peeing doesn't mean it can't be plugged up. Overheat warning alarms (solid tone) or vro oil pump (intermittent tone).

Learn how to test sensors.

The water from the tell tale does not circulate through the engine block.----A 48 SPECIAL would not have left the factory with VRO automatic oil injection.------I would look at the water pump impeller.----Needs a new one about every 5 years.-----Or perhaps a wire has shorted to ground.

the LONG idling at the loading area will produce varying temperatures......... My 1986 30 hp Would sound a steady OVERHEAT alarm as soon as I went 300 feet from the dock. I would race up the motor in neutral for about3 to 5 seconds. Horn stopped. Did that for about 10 mornings. Them never happened again. The thermostat gaskets are TERRIBLE problem causers !!!

If you decided to check the thermostat gasket ? Be... EXTREMELY CAUTIOUS !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
the large plate that has the thermostat under it. That bulge has 3 different sized screws holding it in place. DO NOT remove them FIRST !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! If you do. You will now be fighting the LOP SIDED tension as you remove the rest of the cover bolts.

Your motor may have a DIFFERENT thermostat shape. Some have a simple cover that just covers the thermostat. It is no ...DANGER... or problem to just remove bolts and change the rubber gasket & thermostat.

I went to www.crowleymarine.com Found your engine. Parts are available. The 2 rows of parts in the drawing can be confusing. Post back for helping what you might need. Your motor has the safer 3 bolts holding all those parts in place.

It was a solid tone. I have an original repair manual. I will have to see what's up.

You need to determine if it's to hot. Inexpensive IR gun and test how hot it is...top of the head, 145 or so fast idle. 160 shut it down. If ok then time to test the sensor.

If it turns out your plugged up you will have to go hunting.
