I am having a little trouble figuring out what is wrong with my motor, if any thing at all.

Here is a brief discription of what is going on: Launched the boat in the water, fired up great, go to put it in reverse to back out of the dock and we dont move at all; so i try it in forward and still the samething wont move at all.

I have recently found that my hub was spun, and since have had it rehubed.

Just wondering if that would be my only problem or could there be more to it, like something with the lower unit or gears. Im not sure were to being to check if anything else is wrong.

I need some help, and maybe some tips on different things to check out.

thanks

Re: 1996 evinrude 115 question

I would start by removing upper and lower gearcase plugs to see what comes out of lower one - if water or metal filings, sounds serious. Probably gearcase rebuild.
If just gearoil and maybe a drop or two of water drain entire case and replace oil. Wait for this til after doing the below checks.
Get someone to move throttle/gearshift to fwd and reverse (w/o engine running and watch gear linkage to be sure it is moving the shift linkage going to the foot. Did you hear the engine change when you tried to put it in gear when you had it in the water?
With the engine secured; battery disconnected, spark plugs disconnected, key off, try to turn prop by hand in the normal direction - it should be free and should click as it ratchets (I believe) as if you were slowing down in the water. If you have a manual pull rope, now try to rotate the flywheel (with everything still secured as above- you don't want it to turn over or start while doing this) with the shifter in fwd and watch the prop to see if it will turn or if the engine/gearcase is bound up. If the engine seems bound up try to move the flywheel with the gear shift in neutral - this should worksince you have had it started. All you have to do is turn it enough to see if the gears are moving.
By the way, this assumes it is mechanical shift linkage - I had a 72 Evinrude with electric shift.
This will get it back to the top and maybe give you something to try.
