1996 Evin 15 hp 2 cy. Bogs down "ONLY" in the forward position.

??---You switch those wires to test the coils / powerpack!---I know the motor will not run with wires switched !

I switched them, it would not start.
I have a new coil and power pack coming tomorrow. I'll try the coil first.

Just so you know, the spark plug tester they are talking about is probably different than what you are using. They sell one that you can adjust how far it jumps to see if you have weak spark or not. Some bigger outboards need 1/2 some need 3/8 yada yada yada Hopefully once you get your parts everything will work. Compression wise, motor is near end of it life try and limit how much you put into it and you might want to not go full tilt or overload your boat. Just saying.

UPDATE- Problem solved! Thanks to all of you!!!!!!!!
I replaced the coil, still no work.
I replaced the power pack and it solved the problem. I was back to full speed!

Bought a spark plug tester tool tonight, glad that I did, thanks. Missing spark on top plug..

I'm really glad that I bought the spark plug tester. I asked the guy at the auto parts store and he laughed at me because we all know how to use a screwdriver to test for spark. I finally found one, it's much better than a screwdriver because I can see the spark while it's running. Thanks for the recommendation.
I ended up replacing about everything, tank, fuel lines, fuel filter, carburetor rebuild, coil, and power pack. It problem ended up being the power pack.

Like I said, I'm new to outboards. I think I made a good deal???
I bought the 15 hp outboard for $500- I bought another $250 in NEW parts and it's running great. Sure I put some time and labor into it, but I can chalk that up as a good thing in that I learned a ton about this motor. That will pay off when I'm out on the ocean with problems. Also, the paint is in pretty good condition.
Do you think I made a good purchase?? I live in San Diego

Not sure anyone can answer that question really but more knowledge of things is always good. If your using it in the ocean, stay close to land. Happy boating.

I was going to say to check continuity in your spark plug wires, but I see you are getting new wires. You can look to see if your ground wire for the top coil is corroded, sometimes that's all it is.

Oh, and you made a decent purchase, considering the price of a new 15 HP. Once you get the spark issue ironed out you should be in great shape, those are some good motors.
