Preface: Stuck unknown object in water and broke prop, Limped to shore in forward.

New prop acquired, but stuck in foreward,
Removed cotter pin from linkage on the motor to free up shift lever that travels under the powerhead to the vertical shift rod. Seems as if the shift linkage is free and flops right to left without resistance.
Can see through a gap at the top of the lower unit and observed Vertical shift rod moving.

Should i take this to a shop for a full teardown OR is there access when removing lower unit to possibly repair missing/disconnected bolt at the lower unit connection of shift rod?

Have built Car engines from the bottom up but never boat anything lol

The shift mechanism is in the nose of the lower unit.----The plunger moves DOWN for reverse.----The bore of the plunger has suffered and the shift rod can not go down.----Took one apart one time to salvage parts.----Hacksaw may be required to get the lower unit apart.----This is an expensive project and you need to replace the gearcase at least.

If im evaluating correctly, the shift lever is moving its full range of motion at the power head, and the **** lever is moving up and down. So your saying that it broke off at the gearbox and ruined the entire gearbox?

It would be an easy fix for me.----Have all the parts on hand.----Sometimes difficult to explain how easy this is.----I can not see the actual damage on your lower unit !!!

Update:: I have dropped the lower unit. As it turns out the issue is that the shift rod / Detent assy has seprated. I found the ball but not the spring yet and the shift rod came out on the end of the vertical linkage.

I got the ball out and while playing around with the assembly i was able to push the shift rod in and shift the lower end into reverse. I am thinking if i can assemble the shift rod and detent it will fix my issue.

Should i be able to do this Via the shift "tunnel" or do i need to fully disassemble the lower unit to have proper access??

When you re assemble you will need to set the shift rod height. The dimension can be found in the manual or I believe there is a post in the top secret files at the top of the forum.

I am sure @racerone has the proper dimension. I'm out on the boat for a few weeks and don't have manuals or a photographic memory. I do have fancy internet now.
