I am once again needing the help of you great people. My neighbor just aquirred a fishing boat with a 1996 50hp evinrude. The motor turns over great but there is no fire to the plugs. We only know a little history to the motor. It is suppose to have a new coil and new power pack. I checked for power at the two wires going into the coils and they are dead. If somone can give me a general direction to start looking it would be greatly appreciated. The motor ran up until two weeks ago. Thank you in advance ya'll are always very helpful.

Your best bet is to go to the CDI electronics website and look up your engine. Use their troubleshooting guide to help you find your problem.

To check it out, you'll need a multi-meter with a DVA adapter.

Could a bad ignition switch cause this problem?

If you disconnect the big wire harness plug on the side of the engine it will eliminate the complete harness forward including the ignition switch. Use a spark checker and jump the starter solenoid and see if you get spark. Make sure you have the plugs out, if it would start with the harness unplugged, the only way to shut it down is to choke it off.
