I just got lucky and picked this 94 Scout boat up for free, but the further I get into the resturation process, the more i am realizing why I got it for free. I found one problem that has me somewhat stumped, found that the previous owner fiberglassed over the drain going from the front of the boat to the back and with a little more looking around I found that all of the foam in the front of the boat is soaked! What are my options, without having to cut out the deck? Please help, I have a lot of people to prove wrong!!!

It is almost impossible to restore a foam filled (bonded) boat (whaler, mckee, scout).

Lots of saturated whalers, given their age, but this is the first Scout that I've heard of.

Best option is to drill some holes position the boat so they can drain and let it sit in a dry spot (months, or years). Some try to quicken things by heat lamps, vacuum, etc. but reports seem that it doesn't do much to speed the process.

I'd suggest you check out whaler central and continuous wave forums for Boston Whaler restoration methods.

1. wet foam has to come out....

2. it will never dry, and if it does, it will re saturate as soon as water touches it....like a sponge.

3. the deck has to come out.

sorry

My understanding is that the foam on a Scout is structural bonding the two layers of the hull together. If you take out the faom, you are going to have to design your own stringer system that a Scout does not have. The foam is waht bonds the inner and outer linings. Injecting new foam will NOT do that.

I really suggest you look at the whaler forums I suggested. A few have gone the foam removal route, but it is filled with pitfalls given the pressure bonded construction method.

The one main test in buying a used pressured bonded foam filled hull (Whaler, Mckee, Scout) is to make sure there is no water saturation. All else is icing on the cake.
