I appreciate all replies. My motor grinds in reverse and is getting worse over time. I am assuming that the gear in the lower unit is bad. I'm debating on trying to do the work my self and would like to know everything that I should replace and what gotcha's are there that I need to be aware of? I have already order and new water pump kit and I'm working on building a list for the gears and bearings.

After you check the shift shaft height, and find it to be adjusted correctly, you might price out a new set of gears, seal kit and then compare that to the brand-new gearcases from Sterndrive Engineering (SEI). You will need to reuse your upper driveshaft, if you have the two piece style.

Remember the replacement of some components requires shimming.

Some folks still think shifting slowly and easing these motors into gear is the best thing to do.-----WRONG.

OP does not say how he shifts in reverse ...could be a new problem that crept up.

I used to slow shift until taught to shift quickly. The boat is used and has been doing this since I bought it but it seems to be getting worse and more annoying, so I want to fix it.

Check the upper motor mounts as if they come loose (and they do!) it will bend shift rod making it to short
