If it was pumping oil with motor shut off it sounds like , and could only be the vent plugged on the oil tank.-----VRO pumps are NOT electric.----Vro pump operate with crankcase PRESSURE pulses when engine is turning.
So took the boat out again after cleaning the carbs again it’s back to doing what it was before I did all the carb work. Noticed a week spark on one and two and hit them with cold air on the compressed air can upside down with a very minor improvement however when I blasted the CdI it got significantly better and stopped surging. I also noticed a loose connection at the actual connection for the cdi. My rectifier is working exactly as it should. So I’m replacing my coil packs and the CdI this week.

The power pack was replaced with a used unit 4 years ago and It was a 30 year old CDI when that was done. I’m suspecting stator issues as well but I can’t confirm that until my adapter comes in for my voltmeter. Any idea what the readings should be? My manual I ordered for my outboard still hasn’t made it in and could be another few weeks according to my order info.

A lot of good electronic ignition parts are replaced / tossed out.----Simply by guessing on how they work.----But I do not blame folks for trying.----Many shops now are $120 / hr +tax to figure these issues out.----Easy for me to say but trouble shooting can find the guilty part / parts.

Exactly. This one is definitely faulty when it gets hot I can blast it with cold air and the string stops and it opens up.

That said I’m certain it was due to something else causing the fault. I’m still going to test it when my adapter comes in and verify I’m not getting a grounding out condition in the harness when the wires get hot.

as a temporary option....
Any chance of trying the CDI it with some type of insulation from the engine heat ....

something reflective or heat dissipating like a simple washer or two to reduce direct contact from the heat source ? if indeed it is engine heat induced.

Unfortunately internal grounding or shorts won't be solved with insulation.....
wires themselves getting hot is something more serious... :-(

Ah didn’t think about that. I may try to insulate it and see if that helps.

is this a quickstart motor? i have one 1993 motor with quickstart most arent until 94' but whenever someone says its running rough and high, makes me think its not coming out of quickstart. stuck open t stat, bad temp switch, bad diodes in harness etc.

Here’s a pic of my cylinders after I pulled the head. Top cylinder is the only one with and kind of scoring in it and it feels/looks more superficial than an actual score mark. I had an outboard shop look at it and he said it was fine but if I wanted I could have it machined and go get the oversized pistons but at that point he said he’d just get a new outboard. What do y’all think?0404D298-A87D-4577-80FB-3742BBCB1508.jpeg

Replaced the cdi and it’s working like a champ. Went ahead and replaced the coils after the power pack just to start from scratch
