I just did a quick (very quick) scan of the thread.... Did this boat sink? There is a water line on the inside of the cabin where a cooler would go... If so you should replace everything...This may have been talked about but there are 43pages and I looked at a small% of them!

So I bought some gel coat pigment to do the repair on the liner. It says it can be added to epoxy can I add this to a batch and just roll it on like a paint? Or do I need to use it with a layer of 17 oz? If you guys remember I have to add the stiffeners I removed from the hull So maybe just add the pigment to the batch and use it to wet it out?

You can just roll or brush the pigmented epoxy like paint, or use it in your top lam.....never tried it on lower lams. Theres a max recommended amount to you should add, its on the label if its a USC product.

It gives a little more uv protection, but not enough to stand alone without a topcoat....doesn't look like you need uv resistance in the circled area, in fact, why are you coloring that area anyway? Is there a hatch there ?

I mainly use it to color fairing mix, so I get better paint coverage.

Yes actually there are hatches in these areas but I was just showing that area as a example . those buildups were in my bilge area also.
OK I thought I could use it as a gel coat of sorts in the bilge area.

Yep minch, a couple of coats in the bilge will color it fine...I did my coffin box with a coat, I have a pint of the hayard color I wanted to use up, and use the white for visible areas.

Now I am not trying to start a war but I also have a 1/2 gallon of gelcoat left would it be worth using under deck or just wasting time

Well if I was looking to start a war here, that topic would make the short list lol....Most likely you could get away with using it, if you clean well with water and remove any blush, then sand with 100g.....but there is a risk any lingering amines will interfere with the gel hardening....most likely, you would be fine...but you would be covering a superior surface, with an inferior surface...better off using the tint and epoxy you have already..similar effect, better protection.

Come to think about it, on one side, you have a lowly, crusty 1/2 can of gel, on the other, you have boxes of fresh resin, some pigment you're dying to try, and a whole tray of "bamattas"!......seems like no contest ;)

Question my friends boat has a canvas top that snaps on. Some of the snaps have pulled out from the fiberglass obviously leaving a larger hole. now being the holes are small still would filling with faring be strong enough or should i use chopped in the mix? i'll be using vinyl ester

Ok I am getting close to installing the plywood on top of the stringers that will contain the foam and where I will glue the liner to. My question do I need 2 layers of 17 oz on both sides I am out of glass and going to pick some up so I can get whatever I need If there's something else I can use That is the slurry they used to glue down the liner

If you're using epoxy, 6oz woven fabric is plenty. You're just trying to keep it watertight and prevent the fir plywood from checking.

Thanks Arawak I'm assuming 1 layer each side

That's what I have seen recommended here. I only did the tops myself. The compartment is filled with expanding foam. If water is getting into the wood and rotting if from the foam filled compartment, I've got bigger problems IMO. Also I've seen how that foam sticks to dry wood. I'd consider that abarrier by itself. Others may see it differently.

But I will say that i think in the zeal to over build, we sometimes lose track of how much weight we are adding.

Epoxy, all by itself, is a great water sealer and is very strong. IMHO the bottom of the deck doesn't need much fabric, if any. 3-6oz is plenty. 170z is WAY over kill. It's not gunna crack open when put under load or flex. That's kinda the beauty of it. If you wanna be extra safe then use the 3-6oz fabric but that's about all you'd want/need on each side of the deck. Again, just an Old Dumb Okie throwing it out there for you to make your own decision.;)
