The motor does not need a battery to run.-----It can be started with a completely dead battery.

Since the seller was dishonest, first see if the police know if it's stolen or not (could be bad juju) if it's not go through the entire motor, you don't want it to fail on the cold Michigan lake the first time you use it.

Here is my retro 1978 35 with stickers that are not factory and another picture of what I was doing yesterday in the great northwest.

That is why it pays to get a title, registration or hand written reciept with numbers and specs on the motor !!
Without any paperwork at all it could be stolen !! The sherriff won't return your purchase price when they take it !!
yep. i've never sold a motor without a receipt with serial and model #. not worth the risk down the road!

Nice fish. I’m sure it’s headed to the smoker
Naw, this is a Puget sound winter king (Blackmouth). Dna modified by some scientist/professor to stay in the sound and not ever reach sexual maturity. We call him feeders, and they rip line like hell so pound per pound maybe the best fighting fish and the salmon family.

Because they never go to the ocean they hang out and some of the worst polluted areas that we have and they're full of Mercury, cadmium and all the rest of the gross s***.

I usually give them away to people I hate. 😆😆😆

Only ocean fish for me and they have issues as well. Maybe I'll smoke it first and then give it away! I still owe you one buddy.

I do not think it would start with a rope if it is cold, would it?
edit: I never tried it on anything over my 8 H.P. motors that I've had 'cuz I never thought that I would get enough revs by putting the rope around the flywheel and pulling it, but maybe it will start fairly EZ?

Well you're a master chief petty officer and if you found out a motor you had was stolen, would you want to keep it or go knock the snot out of the guy that sold it to you? That's really the question here.

Yes, I would take the law into my own hands, then I would be going to jail for knocking the snot out of a guy that stole some ones motor and sold it to me, while he gets 90 days probation and I sit in jail for 18- 24 months. Isn't that the way the law works? LOL

Well if you move to Texas then NO.

But if I lived somewhere else I'd be in jail with a smile on my face....

You could always give it a great burial. Again, bad JuJu!

I originally inquired about a problem with my starter not engaging in post #1. Next I found out that I do not have a 1991 motor but I have a 1983 motor. Thanks for all that helped me out on both counts. My starter is working great on a new battery (and I even bought a second new one as a spare on the boat). I will need to know what year the motor really is for ordering any parts for it. Thank you all for the input you offered.

Now don't get me wrong here guys, because I really appreciate the real help that I was looking for and got, but because the seller lied to me when he sold me the motor does not really mean it was stolen and this is where the conversation led to. I would like to just close this thread now from any further comments, please, before it goes even farther south. I get enough of this kind of thing on our local fishing site from the trolls on that site. Thank you!

The Year of the motor, or what HP is not settled. By the Cowl Markings, it appears to be an 83. However a coat of paint can hide many Sins. In my eyes, all bets are still off.

Make sure you install a new water pump impeller.----And lots of motors with the same ignition system parts left the factory.----Many of them do not use electric start.----So , yes it will start cold with a rope !
