1991 Force 70 Questions

Hey I have a Bayliner Capri with the 70 force.

1. The engine doesent idle very well?

2. Also at all speeds above idle the motor cuts out very slightly like it is starving for fuel. When I prime the fuel line I can hear air getting sucked into the line. I'm going to order a new line kit with the both fittingd on the tanks.

3. I was told that i could use Air Cooled two Cycle oil in a outboard. I know that it must be of a higher quality because it must with stand higher temps. Is there any reason why i might not want to run this oil (Champion).

4. Also the tilt trim works great going down but seems to be week going up?

Hi jg, welcome to iboats.

1- New spark plugs?
Correct spark plugs?
Idle too low?
Fuel/air mixture not set correctly?

2- Fuel line sucking in air will do that.

3- You were told wrong.
And it is not of high quality because it must withstand higher temps.
Air cooled 2 cycle oil needs the higher temps to burn it off. It will not burn properly and will leave more deposits and carbon in your engine.

TC-W3 rated outboard 2 cycle oil is designed to burn off at lower temps and minimize deposits and residue that will kill your engine.

4- Have you checked the fluid level?
Are there any leaks in the lines or fittings?

I have not noticed any leaks around the trim system but will check the level. Would it be a problem since I have already filled one tank of premix with the air colled mix to just burn that tank up and then keep using the TCW-3? The tanks still were at least a quarter full before I Mixed with the Air Cooled oil.

The only evidence that I have witnessed to using Air Cooled oil instead of the TCW-3 is that A friend did not listen to me and used outboard oil in a Husquvarna 235 weed trimmer. The motor lasted a long time to my mazement. But when he purchased a newer trimmer with a bigger engine the new trimmer seized.

So what was the difference? The 235 was an air colled two stroke running outboard oil. Maybe he got a way with it because it was older and not as big?

The technical aspect of the air cooled/water cooled oil issue has been discussed here, and many other places on the web. The chemistry, flash point, ash content, blah blah blah, are all different.

Would it be a problem to run what you have mixed?
I don't know, but you tell us how it turns out. :/
I guess I might run it, after I dumped in some tc-w3.

Back a couple of years ago I got my bottles mixed up and used 10-30 auto oil in the gas. Within minutes of switching to that tank, I had scored a piston. I would not chance using the air cooled rated oil.

I decided to just empty the tanks by mixing the mixed with regular gas and running it in the various four stroke engines we have around the house.

The operators maual for my johnson outboard recomended using 30 weight auto oil back in the fiftys. But as we all know technology has changed since then.
