Hi-
This appears to be a great forum! I am excited about owning my first boat, but unfortunately I have to repair a couple of soft spots in the floor. The front of the boat from the rear of the ski storage in the floor and forward is sound, but behind the ski storage to the rear is very soft...my question is should I relace all of the floor or just the rotted parts? Any advise will help...thanks in advance.

Re: 1991 Cobia 17' Floor Repair Questions

I just started repairing the floor in my deck boat. This is my first time to do a project like this and I don't think I will ever do it again.

If it was me I would bite the bullet and replace it all at once so you don't have to go back and repair later on.

Welcome to iboats. I hate to be the bearer of bad new but you are most likely looking at a complete stringer job as well. If your floor is very soft the chances are there is more rot than you think. The stringers underneath probably need replacing as well. I would remove the whole floor from the ski locker back and check all the wood. You will find all of the foam soaked and it needs to come out. If the stringers were not sealed properly from the factory they will have soaked up the water as well. Take a drill with a 1/4 inch bit and drill test holes in the stringers and check for wet rotten wood. If all is good you can seal the holes and put the floor back. Read a few of the threads in the completed boats forum to get an idea of what you might be in for.

You say that if the foam is soaked it needs to come out also.

I took the old deck off and there is water standing between the stringers where the foam is. You think I need to take out all of the foam and stringers and replace them as well? What can I use to replace the foam or do I need to?

Hi Dboyd4k, Welcome... you need to do a search here on core samples to determine if they need removal or not...usually yes! Also it would be better to open a new thread with your questions instead of squeezing them into someone else's...you'll get more 'personal situation' answers that way ;)

The foam is like a sponge and will not dry. If you leave it in you will be hauling lots of extra weight. Do the core samples on all of the stringers and your transom. Do a search on flotation foam as well. All the info you need can be found here and all the help as well.
