Hey everyone! Well I am new to the forums. I have searched to try to answer these questions before I posted! We have a 1991 trophy bayliner 19' with a 120 force. We are just now getting the title after a couple years of hassle. We have a problem with the trim * tilt. You can lift the motor with it but it won't hold it up it leaks back down. I have quite a but of mechanical knowledge but not much of it in the marine world. The system is hydraulic and is there any advice someone could give me for checking troubleshooting it before we have to replace the entire system? The local shops want 150-200 to check it out and let is know what needs to be done. Any help would be appreciated! I want to learn to work on them so I can help others in the future and just to further my knowledge as well! Also we had a Problem with when we would out the boat in reverse it would stall out. The boat was supposed to have been tuned up but we are doubting it! I purchased a repair manual but it doesn't really help on the trim part or the troubleshooting. Does this sound like what it needs to solve the issue? Also does anyone have any links to some articles on tuning these engines up? If you guys can help it would really be appreciated! Thanks for everything and if you have any other questions just let me know!

85-150hp (1984-1994)- Force style system. External pump, integral trim cylinder and separate integral tilt cylinder. Incorporates a separate integral shock absorber.

Two basic types of electric motors are used.

If it has 2 wires it is a permanent magnet motor. wire colors: green and blue.

If it has 3 wires it's a field wound motor. wire colors: blue, green, and black.

Most of the time, leak-down is due to a worn O ring in the check valve.

If you look in front of the pump (side away from the transom) below the reservoir, you will see the pump body with a circular check valve in it. The front check valve (away from transom) services the UP. the rear check valve (towards the transom) services the DOWN.

If they are the check valves held in by circlips, then they must be replaced--they are not serviceable.

If they are the screw in types with a recessed hex, then they can be removed and either serviced OR you can switch the rear with the front. The reason is that the front gets all the abuse from the pressure against it. The rear one is usually good because it only has pressure against it when in reverse and even then the pressure is not nearly as high as the front one experiences.

Replacing either type is not terribly difficult, however, finding replacement circlip types is problematical. Someone else on the forum has in the past given a source.

Hey thanks a bunch. The pump for the tilt/trim has the recessed hex check valves. We will replace the o-rings and see how it goes as soon as we get the time.... never have enough. next we have to get the tuning up problem fixed and then we should be in business!!! Thanks guys!!!
