Wood, In the photo in my last post there was still about a 1/4 in gap.. you couldnt see it because of the lighting.. It was dark out in the photo.. I did manage to get it in to the boat.. here are a couple pictures. I currently have it tabbbed in and am going to put the second tab on tonight.100_0681.jpg100_0685.jpg100_0686.jpg

question on the tabbing... how many layers should i put in? A question about the stringers... when I install them in the boat.... should I have some foam between them and the hull? Feels good to finally have some time to work on it and make some real progress!

Thanks Wood! Great information.

I just finished the second tab lastnight. I am going to have minimal sanding with the cote. With each layer that I apply I am having to do less and less sanding as I am picking up some technique. yay!

will post some picks soon.

here is a picture with the third tab in the transom.. Now its time to cut the stringers. I have read about some putting foam under the stringers... is this a good/bad idea? Whats the purpose of the foam?

Finally making some progress....feels good!

Thanks,,

Re: 1990 VIP Vision Transom replacement help wanted.

You don't want the wood to lay Hard against the hull. If it does when the hull tries to flex the wood won't let it and the glass and gel coat will crack. It's know as "Hard Spots". To avoid this some people place foam on the bottom edge of the stringer. The Glass of the stringer is what actually carries the load of the stresses places on the hull so the wood is basically the mold for the glass to form to. I like to use a bead of PL Construction adhesive to bed the stringers in. Others use PB(Peanut Butter - thickened resin). Check the first link in my signature below for drawings and info on all of this.

Thanks for the info Wood... That was exactly the info I was looking for. I am going to go with your recommendation and use PL. I think foam may be susceptible to absorbing water. You drawings and info are very helpful. Thanks!

Ill be working more on the stringers some more today hoping to have the floor started or in by next weekend... we will see about that.

Re: 1990 VIP Vision Transom replacement help wanted.

The keel of the boat had pieces of 1/4 in plywood that measured aprox 4"x 6" that ran the length of the keel. They were covered These 4x6 pieces of plywood were also under the gas tank and in the bilge area. What is the purpose of this? Is it really needed? Do I need to replace it with plywood or is there something better that i can substitute it with. I was thinking of going in and replacing it with a couple of layers of CSM or 1708. I am kind of leery of going back with plywood in that area... any recommendations???

Update...
Life
I am a little behind where I would like to have been but life happened along the way. *** Last weekend, I proposed to my girlfriend now my fianc?... She puts up with all of my crazyness and boat madness.

I have been really busy at my day job and am in the middle of getting my own business going. My girls are nearing the end of the school year... so we have had multiple concerts, a musical and even managed to squeeze in a Rangers game. (Go Rangers!) This pretty much consumes most of my time.

The Boat
Finally got the stringers prepped and am gluing them in today. I am still not sure what I am going to do with the keel yet. My thoughts are to use some CSM instead of the plywood in the areas in my last post. Hopefully it wont split in half while I am out on the water...lol. If anyone has any ideas, I am open.. after the stringers dry today.. then its the motor mounts, floor and gunnels.. Put everything back together and back out on the lake... woo hoo!

So I have decided to go back in the keel with a 1/4x4x in the keel. I am going to coat it with resin and csm before I glass it into the hull. Ill let you know how it turns out. Been trying to catch some good weather to get it done... I am getting so close and cant wait to get it back out on the water.

Project update..

Its been raining on and off quite a bit here in Dallas. Between the rain and busy life I haven't been able to do more than drink beer and stare at the boat for the last few weeks... lol

I sanded down the stringers and cleaned them up from where I glued them in. I have posted some pictures of the stringers in place. I was also able to get the stringers filleted in and ready to be tabbed in today. I will put the first layer of CSM on the stringers tomorrow..weather permitting. I am going to try to get the stringers and motor mounts in by the end of the weekend. Wish me luck. ;-)DSC_0003.jpgDSC_0006.jpgDSC_0009.jpgDSC_0011.jpgDSC_0013.jpg

so now that i am moving along in my project, can anyone tell me what the best type of paint to paint the floor, gunnels and bilge is? I am hoping to get it painted by next weekend and be ready to drop in the motor soon! :)

So is sounds like Rustoleum is the way to go. Is there any special prep work that i would need to do other than have it nice and clean? Should I clear cote it as well?

Thanks for the info guys... project is going full steam. I finally see what looks like light at the end of the tunnel..hehehe

Good wash down with Acetone. You could add some acrylic enamel hardener to the paint if you wanted to. Makes it cure faster, harder and more gloss.

Re: 1990 VIP Vision Transom replacement help wanted.

Finally have the floor screwed and glued. I put the flotation foam in today too! Yay! Starting to see some real progress. I will have it glassed in this week and should be ready to drop in the motor next weekend! Anyone have any motor alignment tips? I have got to find the tool somewhere any online preferences? It would be nice if I could rent one as I think it would be something I would only need once.

Ill add some pics of the progress soon!
