Hello Gentleman,
My 1990 9.9 Mercury had been sitting in my father's shop for about eight years; it has very low hours and looked and ran like new when I stored it. We took it out this Easter weekend and it ran great for about 3-5 minutes; gradually the motor lost power then died and would not restart. I pulled the carburetor, disassembled and cleaned it and replaced both plugs. I then pulled the prop and fired it up in a plastic bucket; here's where the story goes bad. The engine seemed to run OK in the bucket so I put the prop back on and took it to the river for a test run. The boat fired right up and we took off down river; I noticed a noise I never heard before then hi revs and no go. I pulled the engine up and noticed prop missing; damn! Using the electric motor I made my way back to dock; after pulling the boat out of the water I discovered everything is missing; the prop, output shaft, clutch dog, the only thing left is a gear or bearing in the very front of the lower unit; on the other side of vertical shaft and gear. When we clean up the shop after Easter dinner I found a nut with 3 cogs on one side; it must have fallen off in the bucket when I was test running it and I did realize it and reattached the prop without it. I thought I had a lot of prop shaft threads showing behind the prop nut but since it had been about six years since I looked at it I did not investigate why.
Now to the question; do I replace every part in the lower unit; buy a rebuilt lower unit; purchased a used lower unit. Who would be a good source for any of those options?
