1990 Johnson 60hp: I am getting ready to replace the water pump and have a couple of questions that my manual does not clearly answer:

1. Is the "OMC sealant" and "sealing compound" indicated the same as "Merc Perfect Seal?".

2. Which side of the bottom gasket gets the sealant? Between the gasket and the pump plate, or the gasket and the lower unit?

3. What is the "adhesive sealant" that is noted for the "o" ring also for the bolt threads and grommets?

None of those applications is critical enough to worry about. Yes, OMC Gasket Sealant is very similar to Perfect Seal. Close enough anyway.
OMC Adhesive M is replaced by a Scotch sealant called #847. As for the o-ring it is used mainly as a stickum to hold it in till you get it together. Most any stickum or gasket sealant is OK on the screws.

Thanks. Which side of the lower gasket gets the sealant? Between the lower unit, or between the pump plate, or both?

I have always put sealant on both sides of that gasket, and that was told to me by a professional OMC guy.

I can't remember what OMC/BRP sealant I use, I bought a jar of it 5 years ago and have used it 10 times or so on multiple water pumps, I will look at it tomorrow and let you know the official name, but it's generally known as peanut butter, because that's what it looks like.

I will check in the morning and let you know.

Your water pump kit should have come with some grease for the drive shaft splines, that is the same stuff you can use on the bolt threads, but really any marine wheel bearing grease will work great.
