Hello All:

I'm currently working on an Alumacraft 1990 Trophy with my 7 year old son. We have removed a major portion of the pour in foam, the transom wood and most all parts. We plan on replacing with transom with 2 inches of plywood glued with titebond III and coated with epoxy.

The problem I have is the transom metal (aluminum) is badly corroded. It is pitted, chaulked where the wood was in contact with the metal. We got the boat for nothing from a saltwater situation which I'm sure makes a difference with corrosion.

My plan is to clean the area and hit with JB weld. Skin the interior of the transom with aluminum and glue with 5200. I'm making a plate for the back where the transom has been drilled so many times. 1/4 inch, glued with 5200. Do think I'm on the right page?879.jpg878.jpg873.jpg

Sounds like a plan to me!

Is your transom material (wood) 2" thick? Looks like maybe 2 pieces of 3/4" with a piece of 1/2" sandwiched in the middle?

Sounds like a good start!

On that transom, dont use treated wood. The chemicals in treated wood will react with the aluminum and cause corrosion.

I restored a 21ft starcraft, and the transom on your boat looks very similar. I used a 2x12 for the transom. It worked out great. supported a 125hp outboard no problem!

Do think the transom will be strong enough with the setup i have? I'm putting a 115 yamaha on the boat.

Yes, It was wood transom cover on each side with aluminum. I'm going with the 3/4 with 1/2 sandwich. I've seen titebond III being used or epoxy. I just happen to have a gallon of titebond III so I thought I'd use that. I'm in the hazardous waste industry and get fiberglass resin and different epoxy's and glues alot for disposal. I grab out whatever looks good.
