the hydraulics on my 150hp force outboard lets the motor slowly drop down. What is the best procedure to determine if there is a trim/tilt cylinder problem or a pump problem? thanks.

Re: 1990 150hp force trim & tilt

My 90hp force had the same problem when I bought it. In checking the system, I found one broken and one loose bolt in the trim cover plate. I replaced all the bolts and solved the problem. I don't know if the 150 is the same or not. The Seloc manual has a proceedure for testing the components.
Hope this helps,
1woody1

bbb
Make sure your fluid is up to the top, when your lower unit is tilted to the UP position. If not, fill it up and cycle it 5 or 6 times and recheck it. Will the TNT raise or lower the unit now or is it dead? Does the TNT motor work, but it just keeps falling down? Did it start doing this all of a sudden or did something happen and then it did it? Just curious!

a magnet broke in the electic motor of the pump last spring. a new motor was installed. during the summer the hydraulics would not keep the motor up.

Did you see below there is a 93parts motor with good trim and tilt for sale if the price is right it may be a good investment.

Oil level is full with motor tilted up. Motor raises and lowers fine. It just slowely leaks down. Trying to determine if the problem is with the pump or one of the clinders. There are no external oil leaks.

bbb, Insure that the manual release screw is closed tight .If so,you either have air in the system or unit will have to be dismantled and repaired.

If there are no visible oil leaks, and the manaul release is ok, then its bypassing in the valve body. Unfortunately, the valve body is not serviceable on that unit and requires replacement.

bbb,
Just curious, did you get the tilt and trim fixed? The unit could also have an internal leak in the tilt and trim cylinders. The oil could be leaking by the O rings in either cylinder. Are you using non detergent oil?

No. I am not using a non-detergent oil.
Trying to determine a procedure to checkout the system to find out if it is the pump or cylinders.

Re: 1990 150hp force trim & tilt

I hope this helps - The first thing I would try is to drain the system and fill with 30 wt. nondetergent oil. Detergent oil and transmission fluid foam in hydraulic use. This can cause air in the system. Also make sure all line connections are tight - use and vibration can cause a loose connection. If that does not work, get a Seloc repair manual and check out the proceedures for isolating a tilt and trim problem. They have a detailed proceedure for isolating problems. If the motor moves the unit up and down, I would say you have an internal O ring leak in one of the cylinders. That is a fairly easy fix. If you log on to www.dougrussell.com and enter your model number, it will show a detailed parts breakdown of the system. The tilt and trim units can be serviced - the pump system can be cleaned - if the pump system is the problem, it must be replaced as a whole unit at a cost of about 250.00. Good luck -

If the pump is same a fig 1 and 2 page 523 of Clymer manual ISBN 0-89287-732-4,the check valves in the pump body are leaking. The 2 valves are held in with a snap ring or threaded in using an allen wrench. You will see 2 of theses one facing farward and one facing to the rear. It is same as 125 HP. Search tilt trim for the 125, should find part number of seal and photo of valve. You will not find this in parts book or service manual.

Does anyone have the part numbers for the tilt/trim check valves and where to buy them that Rear Admiral is referring to

At the very top of the Force and Chrysler Forum, you will see topic called
"Force & Chrysler FAQ and other great information"
Under that topic listed at the very bottom, you will see two threads.

One titled "Force 3-wire Tilt and Trim system with shock absorber system "test & repair" procedures. by pnwboat & Jiggz Read all the posts. Links Verified".

The other one titled "Force Tilt & Trim Relief Valve Repair by jerryjerry05 Links Verified".

They have all the information you need. Procedures, part numbers etc.

You woke up a 20 year old post.
Most parts aren't available for the T@T pump itself.
The check valves are usually rebuilt and they only need the tiny rubber seal that goes in there.
If you need parts, the best bet is try to buy a whole motor or a T@T assy.

Not o rings. This link has pics of the parts. You need pic#93
Working on the pump itself: they don't usually go bad. ANY!!! attempt to "adjust" the pump usually destroys it. About the only thing you can service is the check valve.
Be VERY careful when taking apart, soft aluminum.
