Hi everybody,

I have a big question. I was given a 1989 Bayliner ad I would like to restore it. The problem is I don't even know where to begin. I have read almost everything you guys have shared in this forum but I don't even know where to start. I am a newbie I have no experience at all. (I know you think I'm probably crazy lol but I'm not.) My way of thinking is since it was given to me I have nothing to lose if it doesn't pan out. I've looked for books and cannot find any on how to begin or where to start. I have noticed one thing though. You guys are very happy after you spend countless hours doing it and I know I want to be a part of that. If you guys can point me in the right direction I would appreciate it.

Hi Ladj679,

Welcome to the Iboats drydock...you are definitely in the right place...although you will get the help you need, it may take a little while for some of the real knowledgeable guys to jump on board, cause they like to help so much, they have a hard time keeping up...

Let me see if I can help you get started...

Hmmm, where to begin...that's a good question...

this link has tons of great info... http://forums.iboats.com/showthread.php?t=288451

Start out by getting a free photobucket account, load your pictures there, then click the IMG tag to post them here...two things happen with that...the guys don't have to click on a thumbnail to enlarge the pics and they love pics because it helps to help you by seeing what you see...

OK, next...do a careful, but complete and HONEST assessment of the boat...

Have an engine? What Kind? What Shape? Does it have a complete drive? What Kind? What shape? Has the maintenance been done on them? What do the oils look like? Does it run, good, bad, ugly??? Does the steering feel good or is it stiff? Does it seem to shift OK? Are there any soft spots anywhere on the deck? Upholstery need doing? How are the electrics? How does the wiring look? Any visible Damage on the hull? What is the general condition of everything...if it's screwed or bolted down, does it feel loose or wobbly in any way, etc, etc.. Detailed checklist of anything that looks like it would need repair or replacement...

What you are not sure of or can't figure out...that's where the pictures come in handy...so the pros here can help to ID...

Hopefully this will get you started...

Best Regards, Good Luck and Have Fun!

Glad to see another baylinner owner. Looks like a shorter version of mine. Gt gave you the best advice. See where you are at and post your concerns here. I love my baylinner, she needs some attention right now like a wash and wax.

Re: 1989 Bayliner model 1702 Restoration

Thanks for the replies. I got a photo bucket account. I was told the floor of this boat was redone two years ago. I don't know if I believe that though. When I walk on the floor it seems solid and I don't feel any soft spots. So with that being said. How do I know for sure if the floor needs to be replaced. As far as engines go I have two that came with the boat. A 1989 Force 85HP that doesn't run and a 1989 Force 70HP that does run. My wife made me a deal though. If I can actually do this restoration project all the way through to the end. She will buy me a new outboard lol. So I'm not worried about motors right now. I want to do the seats and the floor for the most part.

Here are some pics I took http://s1167.photobucket.com/albums/q623/ladj679/

Can't wait to hear everyone's advice.

Re: 1989 Bayliner model 1702 Restoration

Welcome to iboats. You say you have read almost everything!! "you sir are a liar"! Just kidding always wanted to use that movie reference. But seriously i spent about 3 days just reading "oops" thread and Friscojarretts good stuff.. I am sure oops will chime in. he has chimed in for the past few Bayliner restores to basically say the same thing, most bayliner boats (the older ones at least) have the bayliner rot..
So basically here is where you start.
On my thread i also was told the boat was garaged etc etc... and the boat floor was redone, etc etc... the floor felt very sturdy im 250 pounds and i didnt feel any flex... so i decided what the heck went to harbor freight got a hole saw and made a few small holes and took a few samples of the foam.... hmm so far in good shape... than i really lost my mind and decided to take a "Double Recipricating Saw" and cut a square out of my deck... sure enough waterlogged foam! checked the bottom of the transom... it was painted black but there was rot!! using the handle of a screw driver i tapped around the transom listening for difference in sounds.. after that i took that saw and started cuttin the deck i left about 2 inches along the side because i didnt want to accidently cut through the hull.. mind you i didnt know you are actually recommended by many to leave a lip like that around your boat because it makes it easier to install the new deck height... so i did right in that... after that i got to ripping out the foam. use many tools until you find one that works. i found that using a shove to get out big chunks... (dont just start diving in with the shovel be careful put it down into the deep part of the foam about 6 inches than take a big chunk of foam out... people here at the Iboats Drydock are willing to help. some of us like me suffer from thinking impedements such as a.d.d. so i ramble on and on about thinks that dont have anything to do with the subject so forgive me... my restoration project is not for training purposes mainly to show my progress and ask questions. good luck . look forward to following your thread.

oh and by the way... on the boat restoration building and hull repair forum the top post is a sticky on the forum. Read that! its got tons of useful information, i looked through your photobucket and noticed you were kinda standing the motor up on itself it looked like. in that forum post they actually have instructions how to build outboard stand out of 2x4 pretty good stuff.

Re: 1989 Bayliner model 1702 Restoration

hi.....whats that yellow carp all over the lower unit?

lol....welcome to iboats !

there are several things......first off.....don't automaticly assume the boat needs a gull gut.....but it is a good possibility.

lets hope the guy that re decked it didnt just throw another chunk of plywood on a rotten floor.

the best way tp tell is if you open the ski locker and pull up the edge of the carpet so you can see the edge of the deck plywood.

is there one sheet or two......it should be 1/2 inch thick.

also...in the ski locker ...look at the bulkheads is there signs of weakness or rot? any rot shavings in the area?

in pic 3 .....that 1x4 on the flat that goes across the opening.....that is not supposed to be there.....it should be just a carpet....if they needed the wood there that means the edges of the ply was so rotten that the flange on the alum frame of the locker would just fall through the opening.
if the wood is fine on the edge..it means that they cut the opening wrong.. and a cause to look for improper repair techniques.

that is step one......assess the condition of the boat.
usually, this is done after a good cleaning so you can really see what you have to work with

Looks to me like there is some rot in the bottom of the ski locker ( or it could be leaves) couldn't tell from the pic. That piece of wood going around the opening looks real fishy... Good luck I hope you don't need a full gut but just prepare yourself in case you do. Those gauges are sweet btw!!!

Re: 1989 Bayliner model 1702 Restoration

Hey guys,

Okay I'm learning a lot of stuff thanks to you guys. It's pretty damn satisfying to be learning this much. This weekend I will clean the boat out fully and then I will take up the carpet and take more detailed pictures. When I opened the ski locker and saw that board going across I thought that was normal lol(that's how new I am). My next question is in you guys' opinion is it just better to do a full restore and gut the whole thing and can someone give me a basic list of the tools I'm going to need at minimum to tear up the floor when needed? I just ordered a sawzaw and a crowbar.

Check the link that GT gave you & follow the last link on that page. It's friscoboater's rebuild of a SeaRay. He also has a YouTube channel with tons of videos that will help pull all the stuff you're reading together & make more sense.

A multi-tool is good for trimming down the glass & plywood down close to the hull. A jigsaw & circ saw for the wood to put it back together. Access to a table saw would be helpful. A good strong drill, 1/2" chuck. Cordless will work, but keep the batteries charged. A few razor knives & blades, a few measuring devices, at least 1 3-4' straight edge, hammers, chisels, at least a 4" grinder w/ thin metal cutting blades and flap wheel or sanding discs, shop vac, depending on location: a clean, dry, large space to work.

Among others

Welcome to dry dock, and good luck w/ your project

1 thing to add to your list is the safety equipment. Get a good respirator as the glass when cutting is horrible on the lungs, pair of leather gloves, pair of gloves with latex on the finger tips & palm (you'll see them in Frisco's thread), tyvex suite (so you don't get the itch)n& eye protection. Between this list & JB's list you'll be off to a good start.

Duh, absolutely safety equipment.....Thanks SB89! Those are more important then all the rest..
No problem my friend. I believe it was you that warned me on the dangers of glass and provided me with the same list:D

Re: 1989 Bayliner model 1702 Restoration

Welcome to iboats Ladj679.
I also have the same boat but an 1988, The floor in my boat is original and found it flimsy around the ski locker because of no support underneath, and no is not rotted. I think they used cheap plywood. Just a heads up about Bayliner.
Did you get the cuddy doors when you picked up the boat? I didn't see them in the pictures. Once you get started I can post pictures of my boat maybe to give you some idea's. I have two new captain seats in the front.
Good luck.

Re: 1989 Bayliner model 1702 Restoration

Thanks guys for the safety tips d the tool tips I'm doing some bidding on ebay as I type this. I will def use the right PPE and right tools. Riptorn, I didn't even know it was supposed have doors but I'm not worried about them. You mentioned you had Captains chairs in your boat. That's my plan. I want to have two captains chairs up front, and then have one in the back on the left or maybe in the middle . My boat doesn't have the original fuel tank anymore and I have two of those portable types so I have to find somewhere to put it eventually I'm thinking I can make a space for them where the orignial stern seats were. I have been looking at pics of different setups so when I get there I know I'll have examples to look at. That's a very long way off though. I will be taking up the carpet this weekend to get a good look at the deck. I'm suspecting it will be rotted though as the boat sat outside in MD weather for a year or more I'm told and from the pics of the ski locker something doesn't look right.

How did he get the original tank out?? It's a 10 gallon tank. Don't think it would be possible without taking off the Cap?
Doesn't look like the original carpet on the floor.
Looks like the floor was done, how good?

Re: 1989 Bayliner model 1702 Restoration

Well guys,

I went over and did a little exploring on the boat today using all the advice I've learned from these forums so far. You guys were right. I guess whoever did the floor just cut a new piece of wood placed it down and then used a couple of 2 by 4's to hold it up. Glad I didn't try to take the family out in this boat. The stringers are really rotted even the floor of the cabin is rotted because they just did a quick fix. I took alot of pics today, Please have a look. I'm thinking I probably need to do a full restore from bow to stern. Any I deas on how to get the seats base out? I'm thinking I have to cut them out. I will say I wasn't dissapointed when I took that carpet up. You guys pretty much prepared me for what to expect. Thanks and keep the advice coming.

Hi Ladj,

Just caught your thread....looks like you have a nice project there!

When you upload to photobucket hover your mouse over the pic and a box appears....bottom of the box is the image code...click it and it will copy then paste it here like so.... ;) It helps us old guys be able to see it better :D
