yeah it was just the 1x8 was knotty as hell however they were tight so i guess that's a plus, still not done considering the pourable route just hankering atm

Just got to dig through all of them. I made them get the other pallets off of the top. Out of 3 pallets I found pieces with no knots. Well smaller than a pencil . Same with the plywood I went through everything they had to find the ones with no voids and knots.

I was there a long time. I had pre sorted and then went through them for the best. Then I had to stack everything back on the pallets. Wore me out that day.

They sort this stuff according to grade before they sell it. Some good stuff slips through.

I've decided I like a combination of both ply and lumber. Depends on the applications for me. Most down easters only use lumber vs. ply. Watch out though the smallest knot will gas off when you glass it so make sure you preseal them or you will get bubbles in that purty EEEppppoxxxyy glass.
Most opinions rest on ply being more structurally stronger. There are so many products out there now.
I find for me that ply is the most economical in regards to availability and like you said if done right will last to your grankids.

yeah I don't use epoxy :) and i figure dimensional lumber only has two end grain sides to worry about and i don't have to worry about it swelling and rotting as easily die to not having voids, that said i have no problems with plywood but again if i can use lumber i will :) a 12 ft board works perfectly for the long stringers but i will have plywood in some places, no way to avoid it. if i was using epoxy i wouldn't hesitate to use plywood but i fear epoxy lol and i like like products when it comes to resins

I used dimensional lumber where mine had it. All i know is it was all soaking wet. The lumber definitely holds up better in water.

My stringers where all plywood. I encapsulated in glass and did several layers of 1708. I am pretty sure it will outlive me.

Micky, great progress but did you say the winter weather was slowing you down? Is that some Floridian humor?!?

Have you though about recapping but opening the deck up completely for all your crab/lobster pots?

You really tackle a project when it becomes the priority!!

Actually i still have the Monishka but i turned her back into a bow rider lol so it has plenty of room for pots and what not, the trophy is going to be more a cruiser for me and the missus and stuff :)
the wood bees tore into the wooden framing after i had Completed her, i didn't realize the old fence was full of them and they made quick work of it

I have no doubts to the longevity of the plywood I just decided to do this one this way :) 3 yr old boat stringers were moist but not destroyed in any way , the 88 bow rider i did stringers were completely gone but they were plywood and had way more exposure to the elements, the bow rider i did same as you and i know it will outlive me :)

so i figured out a way to grind stringers with no dust , i have been using water trickling down hull as i grind, it worked well last night but have to be careful with the tools :) and i have rubber boots and gloves on to protect me in case and i am plugged into a gfci!
respirator and full shield still but at least im not in a white cloud lol the grinding on hull is 20 times easier then grinding on the gelcote they sprayed into the hull...

So did you have to put Monishka's seats back in to the dining room ?
Man grinding glass is so much fun ! I feel like I'm getting left out on all the fun ! I could get there in a couple hours to help but i'm sure you'll be done before I can get there ...:D

hahaha no they went to the dump , and yeah i been hard at it but i got to take a break , i got about 8 more hours of grinding i think :)
it would have been so much faster if they hadnt drooled so much gelcote in corners and stuff

I like the idea of the water bath to keep down dust. I will give that a shot next time I have to grind on glass.

so i was wondering i want to fill the old areas where the stringers met hull and then layout a strip of biax over that before moving forward to strengthen hull , matter of fact is it possible to do a whole layer over the old to strengthen hull , any advantages or disadvantages?

Yup you can add a full glass hull bottom. Now is the time to do it and yup will strengthen it. I added glass to entire bottom and any "soft " spots.

thats what i was thinking just plan on adding another layer before i put on the stringers or should i add it in between stringers
so i know stringers are mated to original glass? or does it even matter?

Look at it this way. If you do it before stringers you don't have any vertical stringers or compartments to deal with. You basically have a open field to lay the glass. I'd run side to side end to end before any stringers are placed.
