The model# is 30elced serial# 08156858. the engine is a 1989 30HP johnson. I just put a new starter on my friends engine. I didn't take the old one off so there are a few wires I have questions about. it appears that the battery ground bolts to the starter bracket. There is a ground wire bolted to the bottom of the starter, then grounded to block. Then there is another ground that comes out of harness by starter solenoid that is grounded same location as starter ground. I am getting 12 volts at starter solenoid, but nothing getting through it. I tried jumping the terminals, but it still won't work. I cleaned all battery cables/connections. after doing so I got the starter to spin but wouldn't engage once using ignition, then couldn't get it to work again. My buddy said he saw the rectifier smokeing a few days ago when he was messing with engine. would a bad rectifier affect the starter. or solenoid? Do all these ground wires sound right? Any info on my problem will be greatly appreciated.
