1989 100XP Shock from steering wheel

Folks,

I had my whaler out for the first time this year yesterday and I was getting a slight shock from the metal steering wheel when running the boat. I have gone through most of the wiring on the helm side in the past few years and to the best of my knowledge I do not have any loose grounds. I did notice that my spark plug wires are looking kind of weather and I plan to replace them.

Is it possible that somehow I picked up current from the a cracked spark plug wire that transferred through the wiring/steering cable to the wheel?

Also, what is the best suggestion for purchasing new spark plug wires?

I would be checking all of your wiring in that boat again. If you are getting shocked from the steering wheel standing in a fiberglass boat you have bare or loose wires someplace. Recheck the helm, battery and cables going to the engine and all wires on the engine.

My steering wheel shock came from a shorted out kill switch on the helm, check this out for a wire that is touching around the steering helm.

The lower two spark plug wires mount in very close proximity to the two lower cowling latches. Not unusual for the spark to jump to these latches. You might remove the cowling and run the engine after dark-checking for a snapping sound and a blue flash in that area.

I agree you need to check the wiring and the spark plug boots............

Actually it is a design to keep you awake!!

Thanks guys, those lower spark wires have gotten hung up once or twice on the cover actually. Any suggestions on best route to order new spark plug wires? I want to order them ASAP

Bombardier sells those spark plug wires for the plugs as a kit. 582365.
