Thank you in advance for any help. I have read many posts, have found none with my problem. I have the Design 1, 3 Ram / 3 Wire Trim/Tilt system with the SIDE FILL Reservoir and the square motor. After removing the 2 Allen head screws holding the motor in, I was unable to remove the motor, so I removed the 4 long screws that hold the motor housing to the base. This allowed removal of the motor and revealed 3 screws holding the base to the pump cartridge. I removed the 3 screws to get the base off the pump; there are 2 O-rings under it and 1 is broken. I put 12 Volts to the motor terminals to test it in both directions; it just hums, won't move. All replacement motors I have found on line for this unit come with the cartridge pump attached along with the motor. (Arco part # 6278. The #6277 is motor only, but says "Will not replace original equipment." The #6279 is motor only but it is for "Design 2 with Aft Fill Reservoir") My problem is I can't get the old pump cartridge out of the housing to be able to use the Arco #6278. I screwed the base back on and pried on it but it seems like the base is going to break before that pump ever comes out. Is there something I'm missing here? I can't find a way to free the cartridge from the pump housing. I can't buy just a motor to replace my old one and I can't remove the old cartridge so I can buy the Arco #6278. Again, any help will be greatly appreciated.

I have a 135 HP Mariner and exactly the same problem. Did you ever get the pump out?

I don't know how much this will help, but here goes. I tried till I was blue in the face to get my entire assembly out from between the ob motor brackets. I finally got it out and was able to get another assembly. Getting the new (to me) assembly into place was another bear all together. I finally removed the bolts holding the OB motor bracket to the transom. I loosened the Port side nut on the steering tube, almost off. I used a wedge to work the bracket over to the port side, this created enough space to get the tilt/trim assembly out. I don't know if this helps, but I do know that your chances are a heck of alot better in getting a replacemnt assembly if you have the old one in your hand.

Here's what I know. On the OB Mariner you have to remove the motor from the transom to do properly. Plan on about 5-6 hrs labor

I also have an 89 100hp merc. with a bad t/t motor. I found out today that the motor is no longer made and you have to buy a retro fit kit for the low low price of $546. I think i found a used one in New Orleans. Right now I can not get the old one off. I cannot get to the back allen head bolt out. I'll figure it out! Thanks.
