1988 Maxum redsign and restore project

Got this boat 4 years ago and things were in decent shape for it's age. Well 4 years of hard fishing use, things have started to show their wear. The seats are in bad shape and Just last week I found a soft spot in the floor on the right rear where every one gets in from the swim platform. I'd bet when I dig into it the runners have started to rot out as well as the drainage from the ski locker to the rear does not really work.

So things I know and want to do:

-The back to back seats are going to be removed and a single set of seats installed behind the window.
-Redo the whole floor and 95% sure I will find the runners done as well.
-Turn the ski locker into battery storage for the trolling motor?
-Raise up the front deck 6-8" for more tackle storage.
-Possibly under each window open them up for storage as well.
-make rod holders up each side of the boat so they are not just tossed in the side compartments.
-I guess some sort of Epoxy with sand to provide the anti skid inside the boat, This will also give me the option of hosing the deck down.

So I do have alot of questions for this and been reading all the stickies at the top. One of the biggest is foam for the weight of the boat. On Iboats they only list the boat hull weight and fuel tank empty for a outboard. I found a weight on NADA as 2574# with a stern drive. I am guessing they put foam under the floor as well as the foam I know they put under the seats. And I am guessing they also put foam under the console's up front. So if I am going to relocate some stuff and remove it I am going to have to put more foam in some place.

Another question I have is if I have to replace the runners is there something else that needs to be done to support the weight of the boat while it sits on the trailer bunks?

Put back as much or more foam than you take out.

You'll need to add extra support and "shore up" the hull before gutting the boat too much, when you start removing stringers and bulkheads the hull will sag if not supported properly.

What is the best way to add the support while doing the stringers?

2x4's and/or 4x4's shored up off of a flat hard surface like a garage floor or driveway. If you're going to be working over dirt you'll need to plywood pads on top of the ground to keep the shoring from sinking into the mud if it rains.

This is one thing I would like to fix so the window no longer has the gap at the bottom. I am guessing this is from settling over they years? How does one go about repairing this after I remove the flooring and everything inside?

Here are some more before pictures. Doesn't really look bad for a boat that is ~26 years old.

That is the fishing deck I put in when I bought it. I hate those hinges as the hinge pins are always falling out. So I will be using a piano hinge on the rebuild. Plans are to raise the deck up to about there the current padded sides are for when the seats were up front. This will increase deck with nearly a foot wider all the way from the front to the windows.

Seats are showing some age. They will be tossed out and replaced with a single set of pedestal type up front.

The sides will be shortened to allow more storage of fishing poles vs's just tossing them in the gunwals they way they are now. Not a good way to take care of expensive rods and reels.

This will be a interesting part to fit a set of pedistal seats back in this area. Plans are to make it so when I take friends out fishing they can place some of thier tackle under the seats. Or I may just box it in and use removable seats similar to what they are now.

I Usually store 4 trolling rods in this area in the back. Going to look into a little redesign there as well and maybe try to fit in a Bimi top in there as well as retaining the storage for the 4 trolling rods.

This is the current engine cover, The design really sucks as the cover constantly blows off when driving down the highway. It is a pain to work on the engine unless you take the wooden surround off as well which opens it up a decent amount. I was thinking on possibly throwing it out and making a once piece hood on hinges. That way it would open the engine compartment for easy maintenance.

Has anyone done something like this or got some ideas on what to do there?

If I use that for the deck front to back, What should be used to paint up the sides of the boat's interior, as well as all the compartments up front and under the hatch doors?

something that is not going to break the bank but last a good number of years.

This the where the back seats are. Does this support the back side where the side meets the transom? Would it effect the hull any if I was not to put it back when I redo everything?

Same goes for the 2 front seats. You can see the seat base has been taken to the side the the boat. I'm going to put in some pedestal seats in place of them.

What's your helm look like? I had a similar issue with my boat, the helm wasn't really supported enough. I temporarily made a wood support for it, but finally made a bracket to tie it in with the bulkhead.

I can say there was not much to support it, The panels that have the upper window support screwed into them had either came loose or were never fastened very well. I remember putting a few screws in them and that lifted the helm up a little but never fixed the space in the window. This picture shows the sides that I am talking about.

After much reading and decisions I finally cut into it this week.

I am going to fill the ski locker with foam and install some nice seats for the consoles. Found some foam which was water logged. Rotted floors and some other spots that are rotted out.

Looking at the transom all they did was install it and drill a hole through the wood for the drain plug. I am betting the transom is starting to rot at the very bottom so I might as well replace that as well when I am in there.

I'd always heard that Bayliner and Maxum were similar; that looks nearly identical to my 88 capri(stringers, engine mounts floatation boxes etc.) I subscribed, I'd like to see what you do with it.

I work hard on the stuff, I got 3 days in it this week to pull the engine and get where I am at now. I hope next days off I have the rest gutted and most of it sanded down ready for the new stuff to go in.

I'll keep updating every week how it goes.

I am not sure what thoughts and styles you have in mind, but check out my build. 1988 Glastron x-19. I redesigned mine as well and even though the rear deck seems high, it is very stable and gives me a large fishing area in the rear of the boat.

Good build you had there Snowman. It's amazing how your flooring and seats were nearly exactly like mine were installed.

I like all the info that woodonglass shared. It will really help with redoing my transom.

that rear fishing deck looks great, but for me the rough waters i fish would probably have someone swimming.
