1988 Evinrude fuel issue.

I have a 1988 Evinrude 110 that i just tried out and it seems to be running out of fuel. The squeeze ball goes soft and if I don't keep pumping it the motor will run out of fuel and stall. Fuel pump?

Could be. I had this issue on my 1972 Evinrude 25hp. I had rebuilt the carb with all new needle, seat, float, core plugs, gaskets,etc. I was stumped. Replaced the fuel pump and still had the same issue. No restrictions or any other obvious signs of failure.

So, I took the carb apart, again. Just for giggles I slowly turned it upright (orientation of it sitting on the motor, only with the bowl off) and noticed that the float didn't drop all the way. The needle was sticking. The rubber on the tip had dried up and was sticking closed. Now, your motor should have more than 1 carb on it, I'm guessing, so I'm less likely to think its the same thing. Fuel pump could be the culprit though.

Thanks for the reply I am going to pull the carb apart and clean them and see if that heips.

You should be able to pull the line going from the fuel pump to the carb off and see if when you pull on it, fuel squirts out. That would verify its good. I can't remember if this works or not, but it should, and I do believe I checked mine the very same way.

Thanks I will try that also when I pump the ball it the pump leaks where the pump pieces fit together.

The only time the fuel hose bulb will get hard is when your first prime it at the start of each day. Once the engine runs, the bulb will soften, but should not collapse. That's normal. If the engine only runs full rpm's when you prime the hose bulb, you may well have a weak fuel pump, or a fuel restriction. Check your anti-siphon valve to make sure it does not have any grit around the ball which will impeded it's movement. You may want to pull the fuel pickup out of the tank and check to make sure the plastic pickup tube is not loose (leaking air) on the head unit. Fuel pumps are not cheap for that engine. Over $400. Check everything else before you pop for a new pump.
