Just lost No.1 piston and need powerhead or motor.<br />can i install jack plate and go with 20 inch motor or have to stay with 25 inch motor.<br /><br />Paul-Memphis

i have a 88 bayliner 125 hp and i am having problems with flushing it out i put the ears on the slit near the poplers but it is not shooting water out or anything it is like there is no water coming out this is the frist big boat i own i have other but no this big i need help on where and how i can flush or see if the engine is working i cranks but want stay running cause of no water getting in there i dont know if i am putting it in the right place

That v-hull needs a 25 leg (have same). You could try a plate, but the motor would hang down 5 inches or so now, and the backwash coming off plane could be a problem, swamp the motor maybe.
Hang in here..people here know whereabouts powerheads..weekends are slow, so be patient (seems everybody out boating but me!)

Well Paul, Before you go off the deep end buying a jack plate and engine, ASSESS the condition of your 125 by pulling the head. Sometimes (if you are lucky) The piston will have a relatively small hole melted in the top and/or the cylinder liner will not be scored. If the cylinder is not scored, with a couple of hours time another piston can be installed while the engine is on the boat and almost fully assembled.
If the cylinder liner is scored and needs re-boring, it takes about 5 hours to disassemble and 5 to reassemble. You must wait for the machine shop to bore the cylinder (only the scored one is necessary) and buy an oversized piston. BUT, the cost is going to be way less than 500 bucks if you do the work yourself--and you can with hand tools for the most part. Figure 65 bucks for boring each cylinder oversized, 125 for each piston, and 50 for a gasket set.

Take a couple of good close-up photos and post them.

Frank is correct, check out the damage before jumping ship, I had 0, Nada, zilch, experience with outboards, got a 125 force, blew a piston or 2, tore it down, sent it in for machining, bought the parts, and put it back together myself, piece of cake, honestly. And if there is no cylinder damage, replacing the piston and rings while the powerhead is still on the boat is, as Frank mentioned, possible. Mine cost under 600 to do the entire thing, that was 2 pistons, gaskets, oversize machining of 2 cyl, and re honing all 4. And telling everyone you did it yourself feels good too!


Lilbit, Don't hijack someone elses post, make your own post. But for the record, my 125 doesn't work well on muffs at all, put it in a deep barrel, or back it into the lake, and make sure your overheat alarm is working!
